Warriors begin football practice
Although sports fans have their eyes focused on the baseball races these days, it will not be long until they turn their attention to the gridiron and the sight of high school students playing football. Wawasee High School gridders. under the direction of head coach Myron Dickerson, have been involved in conditioning drills for the past month. Now, as August rolls around, it is time for the beginning of official practice sessions. Aug. 6-7 The Warriors will begin their workouts with two days of noncontact practices on August 6 and 7. Sessions will run from 3-4:30 p.m. and 6:30-8 p.m each day. Full contact practices begin on Wednesday, Aug. 8. With the exception of Saturday, Aug. 11, all sessions from Aug. 8 to Aug. 14 Supreme is tops in Indiana Supreme Corporation. Goshen, captured the championship of the Indiana women’s “AA” state fast-pitch softball tournament last weekend. The team now advances to the Midwest Regional at Pekin, 111., Aug. 8-12. Four Wawasee High School graduates, Barb Brouwer. Betsy Williams, Phyllis Newcomer and Brenda Replogle, are members of the Supreme team.

will begin in the early morning and run into the late afternoon. Players will have periodic rest breaks during the all-day practices. The annual “Soap Game” will be played on Saturday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. The first varsity contest is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 24, against North Wood. Frosh. Meeting An organizational meeting for those students interested in playing freshmen football will be held on Thursday, Aug. 2, at 6 p.m. in the WHS P.E. Annex. Parents of prospective players are also encouraged to attend.

Practice schedules will be handed out at the meeting. In addition, Dickerson and freshmen coach Rob Hansen will be present to explain the freshmen program and answer questions. Dickerson also plans to offer a freshmen clinic later in the summer. Information on the clinic will be available at the organizational meeting. According to Dickerson, the freshmen program is in need of people who are willing to assist Coach Hanson. Milford The Milford Baseball Booster Club marked the end of the 1984 season with its annual awards program and ice cream party on July 28. Individual and team awards were presented by Don Beer, Jr., Booster Club vice president. Beer was assited by summer recreation directors Kent Doty, Gary Sorensen and Ron Douglas. New officers were elected at the close of the evening. Serving the club for the 1984-85 year will be Don and Kathy Beer, president; Ken and Lynn Beer, vice president; Berg and Sharon Anderson, secretary; and Beth and Hubert Krull, treasurer. There will be a special meeting on Aug. 6 at 7 p.m. in the Milford Elementary School to discuss plans for next year’s program. The public is invited to attend and share ideas. North Webster Accur Cut nailed down the championship of the Girls Minor League with a 23-10 win over UTS on July 27.

Cathy Henwood ahd Amanda Shoemaker had doubles for UTS in the loss. On July 28, UTS nipped Dave Carey 13-9. Crystal Carr had a double, Charity Cripe a triple and Edna Agiela a home run for the winners. Accur Cut finished first in the standings with Dave Carey second and UTS finished third. In Boys Major League Action, the Sox and Reds split a pair of games over the past two weeks. On July 24, the Sox scored a 10-7 win. The Reds returned the favor on July 31 with a 4-3 victory. In the lone Boys Major League game, the Reds socked the A’s 22-5. Erik Stevens had four hits, and Jason Mickley and Craig Nuckles each had three for the winners. Ladies golf results Big Boulder Sally Black had a fine outing at Big Boulder Golf Course last week, capturing first place in the low gross and low net categories and tying for first in the low putts category. Other winners were Leatrice Rapp (second low gross and tied for first in low putts)), Peg Custer (third low gross) and Maxine Johnson (tied for first in low putts). The public is invited to a mixed scramble on Friday, Aug.-10. Tee-off time is between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. A sign-up sheet has been posted in the clubhouse. Maxwelton “Medal Play" was the play of the day for the Maxwelton ladies' golf outing on Wednesday, July 25. Nine and 18-hole players competed together. Marge Kavenaugh had the lowest gross score followed by Jackie Wortinger. Alice Herbison turned in the day’s lowest net score. Maggie Smith was second in that category. June Auer and Dot Wysong tied for first in the low putts category.
