Several records set

Swim Club claims league championship

The Fort Wayne Summer League swimming championship belongs to the Wawasee Swim Club after it finished in first place Monday, July-23. Coaches Tim Caldwell and Sue Ganshorn were elated with the team’s performance, and with the first place trophy. Two swimmers from last year’s Wawasee High School team led the-way to the championship. Bob Galloway, who earned the right to swim the breaststroke in the state finals last year, Won the breaststroke in the age 15 and up category. Teammate Jon Shoemaker won the freestyle competition in the same age division. Also winning at the league championship were Kris Neff, backstroke for ages 13-14, Scott Berkey, butterfly for ages 11-12, Thaddeus Dußois, freestyle for ages 11-12, and Andy Kryder.

freestyle for ages 9-10. The club also enjoyed great success with its relay teams. The team of Eric Schaekel, Chris Ganshorn, Kryder and Brad Koser won the medley and freestyle relays in the 9-10 age group. Lori Boles. Sherry Payne. Shawna Miller and Sue Staulcup were the 11-12 year old winners in the medley relay, while Dußois, Casey Kline, Scott Berkey and Steve McDaniel won the medley and freestyle relays in the same age division. Shoemaker and Brett Atwood continued the impressive victory total with a victory in the medley relay. Later, Galloway, JeWson, Shoemaker and Steve Rozow were victorious in the 15 and up freestyle relay. ‘ Besides all of the victories in the meet, several team records were broken. Danielle Laub set a record in the 100 intermediate medley with a 1:51.440. Also, the team of Dagney Hersh, Danielle Laub, Holly Meditch and Stacy Neterer broke the eight and under age group 100 medley relay with a 1:34.400 clocking. Another record set in the same age level was in the 100 freestyle relay. Holly Meditch, Kati Ryan, Dagney Hersh and Danielle Laub won the 100 freestyle relay with a 1:25.920 showing. medley relay with a 1:15.080 and 100 freestyle in a time of 1:05.560. In the 11-12 class, Lori Boles set new records in the 100 intermediate medley with a 1:14.250 and 50 butterfly with a : 31.940. Shawna Miller, Sherry Payne, Lori Boles and Sue Staulcup won the 200 medley relay with an impressive 2:19.260 time. Later, Sherry Payne, Shawna Miller, Lori Boles and Tonya Perzanowski had the best time in the 200 freestyle relay, 2:09.380.

Ski tournament at Camelot Lakes The Camelot Ski Team and the Indiana State Ski Club are sponsoring the Midwest Regional Water Ski Championships August 3, 4 and 5 on Camelot Lakes. Skiers in all age divisions will be taking part in the action which will begin at 7 a.m. each day. Over 300 skiers from this area and 13 states around the Midwest are expected to compete. This is the second time thistOUrnament has been held in Indiana. Events to be held during the three-day affair include slalom, tricks and jumping. In slalom skiing, a contestant attempts to complete consecutive passes through a sixbuoy course, with each pass becoming more difficult as the boat speed is increased andthe towline is shortened. In trick skiing, contestants perform as many difficult and intricate maneuvers as possible in two 20-second passes through the course. In jumping, skiers attempt to go as far as possible off a jumping ramp. Contestants may qualify for the National Water Ski Tournament and set records at this meet. WHS tennis \ begins Aug. 6 Wawasee High School boys’ tennis coach Scott Siler has announced that the team’s first practice will be held on Monday, Aug. 6, from 8:30 a m. to 11:30 a m. All those interested in trying out for the team should be present at the practice session. Students must have physical examinations and insurance coverage before participating in practice sessions. WHS swimmers report Aug. 6 Wawasee High School girls’ swim coach Tim Caldwell has announced that all girls interested in trying out for the fall team should report to the WHS pool at 9 a.m. on August 6. Jennifer Titus, Neff, Danielle Iwankowitsch and Steph Berkey had a 2:15.525 clocking for a new record in the 200 medley relay. Matt Fryabck’s : 34.810 time in the 50 backstroke was also a record for the club.

Member/guest tourney at Tippy Country Club The Tippecanoe Lake Country Club, Leesburg, will host its 22nd annual member/guest golf tournament for men on Aug. 3 and 4. The field of 116 two-man teams, comprised of a member and his guest, will play a best ball format on the first day and combined scores on the second. The field will be divided into six flights according to handicaps. This event, known as the V.I.P. Invitational, will feature guests from throughout the United States and is the highlight of the Tippy golf season. The tournament committee, headed by Club President Jim Bricker, has been planning the event for the past 11 months. A practice round is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 2. The ladies will hold a tournament on the same date at South Shore Golf Course, Syracuse. V.I.P. activities will conclude with a dinner dance at the clubhouse on Saturday, Aug. 4. Volleyball to begin August 10 The first practice for the 1984-85 Wawasee volleyball team will take place Friday, August 10, at 8 a m. in the Wawasee High School gym. In making the announcement Wednesday, July 24, Coach Barb Brouwer said that players must have their physicals completed prior to practice. Forms are available from the office at the high school. Cross country begins Aug. 6 The Wawasee High School boys' and girls’ cross country teams will begin practice on Monday, Aug. 6 at 7 p.rh., according to coach Jerry Minton.
