SCHOOL’S OUT but not for Ned Speicher, principal of Milford Elementary and Junior High Schools. He is very busy this summer, even though the students are on vacation. The three best things about teaching school, so the old joke goes, are June. July and August. The truth is that while school kids are working summer jobs, going to fairs and enjoying the warm, fleeting days of August, teachers are getting a jump on lesson plans and school administrators are working to make sure the coming year is a successful one. Speicher says his work in the summer is divided into three main areas: ordering books and supplies; interviewing and hiring personnel; and working out the puzzle of student and teacher scheduling. 8 responsibility for nearly idents. Speicher’s bookg task can consume a 10l . Each student takes five subjects. Although new ks are purchased only onc£'\every five years, the studenNsneed new workbooks for each class. This amounts to well over 3,(MM)? books that must be reviewed; approved and purchased. In addition to the books, supplies for teachers, office workers and>ne other people who keep a school running have to be ordered. Interviewing potential teachers, secretaries, aids and other workers also keeps Speicher busy during the sum mer. Since school closed this spring. three teachers and an assistant principal have been hired to work at Milford. Each hiring process.- which includes interviews, a recommendation to the superintendant and board of education and takes from two weeks to a month Speicher says the third area of his summer work — student and teacher scheduling — requires the most time of all. together a schedule that keeps the student/teacher ratio at 21 to 1, and everyone happy, is like working out an administrative jigsaw puzzle. Speicher, who spent eightyears in the classroom before becoming an administrator five years ago, still considers himself a teacher. The only difference is that now his classroom includes teachers, parents and the community as well as the students. MEMBERS OF the Jacob Bucher family honored him Monday as he celebrated his 95th birthday. Cake and homemade ice cream were served at the Bucher home on Waubee Lake. Present were his wife. Dorothy; his daughter and son-in-law, Willard and Yvonne Conn of Tippecanoe Lake; his son and daughter-in-law. Wayne and Irene Bucher of Dewart Lake; and the following grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Junior and Sandy Bucher and Amy; Don and Peggy Bucher. Shane, Brandon and Shanda; and Cindy Harper, all of the Milford-Dewart Lake area. An article in last week’s paper incorrectly listed the number of grandchildren and greatgrandchildren of Bucher. He has four grandchildren, seven greatgrandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren . DIANE K. Perry of Milford attended a health facility administrators' course this summer at Ball State University. Successful completion of the course meets the educational requirement for licensure in Indiana as a health facility administrator of a long term health care facility. Individuals must then complete a six-month internship as administrator-in-training and pass the state board examination.

Diane, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. N. John Perry of Milford, is an office manager at the Lakeland Loving Care Center, Inc. This scribe decided to take in the rodeo at the Elkhart County Fair last week along with some 5,000 other people and was very surprised to see Chuck Myers, a former area resident who now resides in Joplin, Mo., walk into the grandstands. And he submits the photo shown here to prove his point. Haney is almost lost in the corn on his 165-acre farm, as shown in the photo taken July 4th, when the corn is traditionally thought to be “knee high by the Fourth of July.” Haney says only twic£ in his lifetime has corn been this high .285 rate for Clay Township Clay Township has a proposed tax levy of .285 for 1985, according to the budget published elsewhere in this issue. on July 4. Fertilizer has much-.to do with the abundant corn yield, he adds. Behind farmer Haney is a forest of walnut trees which increase in value year by year, he points out. He says com this year is expected to yield well over 100 bushels per acre, while wheat will yield 670 bushels per acre, rye about 40 bushels per acre and oats 100 bushels per acre. He also noted that on Tuesday of this week farmers west of Milford were side delivery raking a third cutting of hay. It will stand a fourth cutting, he said. “Truly a Garden of Eden," Haney added. MR. AND Mrs. Mark Baumgartner and Mrs. Harry Haab, all of the Milford area, spent last weekend in Indianapolis visiting Clark R. and Lani Crafton and sons, Reed, Ryan and Shawn. an Indianapolis restaurant for Clark in honor of his 41st birthday. Attending the event, planned by Mrs. Crafton, with the family members were three other couples. Clark is the son of Mrs. Haab and the uncle of Mrs. Baumgartner. GRANDPARENTS OF a number of Elkhart County 4-H Club members are bursting at the seams with pride over the honors earned by their grandchildren at the recent Elkhart County Fair. Our list is incomplete but we have a few names. Chris Truex of Goshen, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Krull, had both the grand champion senior doe and the grand champion doe in goat exhibits. Melissa Snider of New Paris, granddaughter of Marshall Miller, exhibited the Jersey grand champion in 4-H dairy. She also had the senior champion and grand champion, the Jersey junior champion, won several blue ribbon honors and junior

showmanship honors. And, Kristy Schermerhorn, granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Bud Sawyer of Waubee Lake and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schermerhorn of Leesburg, won state fair honors in division two of flowers and gardening. OBSERVATION: HOW can anyone watch the Olympics on television this week and not be proud to be an American. There’s more truth in the commercial that’s currently running to promote prizes that can be won than we would guess it’s producer
