4-H IF YE program gives chance for foreign travel

HOYT Extension Agent 4-H and Youth Each year young people in Indiana have the opportunity to travel through the International 4-H Youth Exchange Program, more commonly referred to as IFYE. The purpose of the IFYE program is to provide a crosscultural experience, help to increase international understanding and to give emphasis to the value of 4-H and similar programs throughout the world. Four-H is the largest youth organization in the world, involving young people in nrany different nations. IFYE brings 4-H’ers from all over the world together helping them to learn more about themselves and their host countries. Participants in the IFYE program live with host families in the country they are visiting. They usually stay for a two week period with each host family. In that time they are literally incorporated into the family structure. The members of the host family become mom, dad, sis or brother. The IFYE program follows the 4-H philosophy of “learning by doing.” The IFYE program offers its participants an insight into a country that tourists rarely gain. The delegate has the opportunity to learn from working alongside his host brother on a farm and join in the experiences of the entire family. IFYE delegates are also representative of the United

We’ve had IFYE delegates to Panama in 1971, to Finland in 1980, to Switzerland in 1981 and the People’s Republic of China in 1982. We have also hosted inbound IFYE students from Italy in 1979 and Germany last fall. Presently applications for the 1985 IFYE delegation are available through the Kosciusko County Extension Office and are due by August 1. Etna Township Trustee Robert O. White and members of the advisory board will meet at 7:30 p.m. on August 21 in their regular meeting place to conduct a public hearing on said budget.
