l 1w » i 1 \ oKb HIGH FLYING ACT — Technical Director, Jaye Beetem, masterminds the construction of a flying apparatus for the production of "Peter Pan” at the Enchanted Hills Playhouse from August 8-19. As many as four performers will fly at one time in conjunction with music, dancing and dialogue during the stage play.
'Peter Pan' to fly at Enchanted Hills Playhouse
Everybody is familiar with the story "Peter Pan,” but few have seen the stage play. The reason for relatively few theatres producing "Peter Pan" is the difficulty of the flying Peter and the children, and often when it is performed the characters use a tramploine, mist, or a variety of tricks to avoid the difficult and potentially dangerous task of wire flying. The technical staff at Enchanted Hills Playhouse have been studying the problem of flying actors for over a year in anticipation of the production. EHP Designer/Technical Director Jaye Beetem was recently involved in a production of Peter Pan performed in Detroit and brings expertise to the EHP Production. Beetem stated, “The main problem at EHP was creating, or building, a grid (a super-structure above the stage) capable of allowing us to mount the wire flying apparatus. The pulleys, etc. used for the illusion must be strong enough to support well over 2,000 pounds at any one time " Perhaps of more Thurs., Aug. 2 BUFFET Macaroni 8 Cheese & Chicken tg2s Fri., Aug. 3 SWISS STEAK Sat., Aug. 4 PORKCHOPS SUNDAY BRUNCH Served 10-3 . , . interest is how exactly the flying will be accomplished. Hesitant to reveal all the secrets, Beetem summarized her approach by stating that the system basically involves a block and tackle from which a wire is suspended to allow the actors to hook-up. Stagehands pull on a rope offstage which flies the actor vertically. A separate pulley system mounted parallel to the proscenium arch is attached to the moveable vertical system creating horizontal movement. The real problem is coordinating the system so that as many as four performers can be flown at one time. After the basic, flying is accomplished as many as eight stagehands must fly the performers in conjunction with music, dancing and dialogue. The hook-up system uses specially designed nylon harnesses that actorc wear under their costumes. A special hook attached near the seventh to eighth vertebrae of the performer allows almost a free-flying feeling. The harnesses are custom designed for the individual performers by Beetem and Jayne Jaynes. EHP costume designer. Jeff Koep, EHP Artistic Director, emphasized that safety is of the utmost concern. He and Producer Jill Stover have consulted with professionals in engineering in order to ensure maximum safety. Koep said, "Our production of Peter Pan’ will be the highlight of the season.” It’s

Unravel mysteries of Nature Preserve
ByRANDYJACOBS Staff Writer The biological mysteries of the Edmund and Virginia Ball Nature Preserve are slowly being unravelled. Part of the most extensive wetlands complex in Northern Indiana, the wooded, swampy preserve provides nesting, breeding and feeding grounds for countless waterfowl, amphibians, reptiles and mammals. For the first time in history, the area is being examined in depth. The 219-acre wooded marshland that links James Lake and Lake Tippecanoe was the subject of an intensive five-week study which ended July 13. This was the beginning of • a two-year comprehensive examination of the preserve. The study will catalog all the preserve’s natural and cultural aspects, and provide infor proper management.
family show with excitement for everyone. “Peter Pan” will play at EHP August 8-19.
A lot to like
By LARRYSHORES Guest Reviewer Editor, The Muncie Star “Camelot,” that mythical mix of pageantry and romance, makes for an often diverting evening of entertainment at Enchanted Hills Playhouse. , The play, which finished its first week Sunday, continues for five more performances Wednesday through Sunday. It is the latest in a most ambitious season for the company of actorc who again are under the guidance of artistic director Jeffrey Koep, back for his fourth year at EHP. “Camelot” is not Koep’s best work, but it is a difficult vehicle for actorc and actresses of this level of experience. The story, at times murky and hard to follow, required players of greater range. Similarly, the music of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe will not come alive to the fullest extent without welltrained voices of sufficient power and expression. It is best to approach this offering of “Camelot” with the understanding that no Richard Burtons or Robert Goulets are go-
Conducted by a team of students and professors from Ball State University, Muncie, the initial study took the form of a detailed inventory of the site’s flora and fauna. “We need to do this kind of analysis so that nature can be properly understood and used," said John Russell, professor of landscape architecture and one of the leaders of the study team. “This type of firsthand study also deepens the students’ understanding of nature and their respect for the fragility of life.” Leading the team along with Russell were Dr. William Crankshaw, professor of biology, and Martha Ritter, graduate assistant. Eight undergraduates from a number of different academic areas rounded out the study group. Since the wetlands constitute the largest underdeveloped shoreline in Indiana and are extremely swampy, they present a unique challenge to curious scientists. To get a handle on their 219-acre specimen, the team divided the preserve into a series of 10-meter by 10-meter zones. They then subdivided these zones into plots of various sizes. The next step was to methodically canvas the plots, recording and collecting samples all the different species for identification. Russell estimated that the
ing to pop out from behind the scenery. If that is done, you will find a lot to like. The story is set in the mythical kingdom of Camelot in the days of King Arthur and his knights of the round table. It centers on an eternal triangle involving Arthur, his queen Guenevere and the daring Lancelot. The latter is attracted to Camelot by the opportunity to serve Arthur, but soon puts his scepter aside when he catches sight of the lovely Guenevere. Mark Korres, as Arthur, is occasionally up to the dramatics of the role, but his portrayal suffers from a lack of consistency. He is overly vulnerable and not nearly commanding enough A bit more gusto is provided by Jeffrey bittie-, in the role of Lancelot. Both he and KOrres have pleasant singing vdices, and
DNR growing Pennsylvania muskies for stocking
Approximately 7 0 muskellunge fingerlings, destined to be stocked in Lake Webster, were recently received from Pennsylvania by the Indiana Department of Natural Rescources. The muskies, measuring 2 in-ched-long, were released into a 6-acre rearing pond on the TriCounty Fish and Wildlife Area, North Webster, where they will grow to 10 inches long before being stocked into Lake Webster in October. The muskies were obtained in a fish trade between the Indiana DNR and the Pennsylvania Fish Commission. Indiana provided white bass fingerlings in trade for the muskies. “If the muskies were stocked directly into Lake Webster now, very few would survive because they are too small,” said DNR fisheries biologist Jed Pearson. According to Pearson, mortality of small muskies is high even when there are few predator fish present. Court decision The Supreme Court, in a potential boost for, the growing crackdown on drunken driving, said recently that motorists stopped and questioned by police for traffic offenses generally do not have to be warned of their right against self-incrimination.
team was able to identify between 300 and 350 different species. They were not able, however, to collect “vouchers” for all of them to make the finds offical. A voucher, in vegetation' study, is the flower from a plant. Since the period of study began in mid-June after many plants had finished blooming, some flowers will have to be collected next spring. Along with their study of the current plant life, the group tried to discover some of the nature preserve’s cultural history, said Russell. Evidence of Indian activity was found on the site; one arrowhead was uncovered during soil tests, and charcoal remains of a fire were found five inches under the topsoil. Russell said they couldn’t be sure whether the fire was man-made or rratural, but estimated that 100 to 150 years had passed since the fire had burned. The next step in the study will be to return during the year to examine changes through the seasons. Russell hopes that after taking samples this fall and the following spring they will have “captured” 98 percent of the preserve’s flora. The scrutiny of the site, however, will not end there. “The value of this type of study is quite high,” said Russell. “The purpose is to establish a solid

Little manages a decent rendition of “If Ever I Would Leave You,” probably the show’s best song. Nancy Leigh Scoggins is fine as Guenevere. She pays attention to the business at hand and exhibits . a better than average singing voice. The pace of the play improves dramatically in the second act with the arrival of Mordred, longforgotten illegitimate son of Arthur. Darryl Maximilian Robinson injects verve and excitement into the role and dominates the stage during his moments. Also worth mention is the work of David Kiefer, who adds good humor in the part of King Pellinore. Kiefer, listed as the company’s master carpenter in the playbill, brings excellent timing and a likable naturalness to his role. Costumes are colorful and authentic and add much to the
Pearson expects to 'recover 3,000 muskies from the rearing pond in early October. Their release into Lake Webster marks the fourth year muskies have been stocked there. THe DNR hopes to eventually obtain its own muskie eggs from adult muskies collected at Lake Webster. Muskies are cannibalistic, and will actually eat each other if there is not sufficient food for them. “We’ve added lots of minnows, shiners and other forage fish in the rearing pond to provide plenty of food for the muskies,” said Pearson. “Even so, we’ll be very happy to get back 50 percent of them.” Earlier success of growing muskies and pike in the rearing pond have provided returns ranging from 19 percent to over 50 percent.

Funding has been used for scientific, photographic and blueprinting equipment, as well as other material for the study. Fishing Report Purebred muskies continue to hit at Lake Webster. The most recent report included a 12-pound muskie measuring 40 inches long. And it was only 3 years old! Bear Lake in Noble County is producing catches of northern pike on fast trolled silver spoons. Concentrate along the west side of the lake opposite the boat ramp. Some excellent largemouth bass fishing has been reported at River Lake, also in Noble Coitnty, at the Chain O’ Lakes State Park. visual enjoyment. The set, although somewhat utilitarian, is more than adequate. The basic “great hall” set is supplemented by a curtain painted as an outdoor scene, but for some reason the curtain was not displayed during scene 3 when the action switches to the countryside. It was disconcerting to watch the actors performing around a maypole planted in the middle of the great hall. I have a hunch this cast will do even better during the play’s second week when the actors are more sure of themselves and their roles. When that happens, “Camelot” will truly become a shining moment and an exciting place to visit.
