AH y NAMED OFFICER OF YEAR — Rushville Chief of Police Ron D. Cameron, a 16-year police officer, was named winner of the Indiana American Legion’s Lewis-Schmidt Law Officer of The Year Award on July 14. Cameron was cited during the Legion’s 66th Annual Convention now under way at the HyattRegency in Indianapolis. Serving Rushville through both Democratic and Republican administrations, Cameron is a past president of the Indiana Association of Chiefs of Police and has served as chariman of training for that group since 1982. He also serves as training officer for the Police League of Indiana. In 1983 he was nominated to serve as a member of a national group of law enforcement officers that study and discuss juvenile related problems. Cameron is a member of the Law Enforcement Coordination Committee of Southern Indiana and of the Indiana Data Communications Systems Committee of the Indiana State Police. In 1980 Governor Orr appointed him to the Indiana Joint Law Enforcement Task Force. Cameron is active in community affairs and has sponsored the Law Enforcement Explorer Post of Boy Scouts; school safety patrol; Rush County Muscular Dystrophy Committee and March of Dimes. He was nominated for the Lewis Schmidt award by Rush Post 150 of Rushville. Extensive damages result from two car collision Over SI,OOO damage was received to cars driven by Emily Edwards, Milford, and Rene Cantu, Milford, after they collided with each other Monday, July 16. According to Town Marshal Dave Hobbs, the Edwards vehicle was northbound on Old Road 15 around 6:10 p.m. when the Cantu vehicle was backing into a private driveway. Cantu’s car proceeded to back into the passenger side of Edwards’ car causing the damage. No injuries were reported.

Minor accidents bring high damage figures
Four accidents claimed no victims, but did rack up some high amounts damage to vehicles on Syracuse streets throughout the past week. Most recently, a car driven by Russell Graf, Blufton, Ind., struck a moped riden by 22-year old Bonnie Niles, Syracuse, Tuesday afternoon, July 17. Miss Niles sufferd lacerations to her forehead and abrasions on her arms and legs. She was transported by Syracuse Emergency Medical Unit to Goshen General Hospital. Other Accidents • In other accidents, Steve Kuhl, Cromwell, was northbound on Syracuse-Webster road when he slammed into a car driven by Robert Miller, Syracuse, at 6:22 p.m., Thursday, July 12. According to police reports, Miller was backing out of his driveway, and was approximately four feet out onto the road. Kuhl failed to see Miller prior to the collision. Kuhl then traveled about 100 feet beyond the impact of the collision. Crash at LCB • Allen Butler, Goshen, was backing up in the Lake City Bank parking lot when he rear ended a car driven by Nancy Hickman, Syracuse, Tuesday, July 10. Butler was surrounded by other vehicles in the parking lot, and was trying to get away when the accident occured. Mrs. Hickman was passing by when Butler’s car struck hers. Over S4OO damage was reported to the Hickman Mini 4-H judging Over 250 Elkhart County youth ages eight and nine will be displaying MINI 4-H projects at the Elkhart County 4-H Fair, July 20-28, according to Carol Hess Gushwa, County 4-H Agent. MINI 4-H’ers will bring their completed projects to Building 15-A on the Elkhart County 4-H Fairgrounds, Tuesday, July 17, from noon until 8 p.m. MINI 4-H’ers will fulfill their project requirement by exhibiting their project at the 4-H Fair. By meeting this requirement, each MINI 4-H’er will receive a completion certificate from the Cooperative Extension Service on August 2, at MINI 4-H Achievement Night. Hann was driving in the parking lot of Red-D-Mart when Gardner started backing up from his parking space. He failed to see Hann approaching prior to hitting his vehicle. The 9:45 p.m., accident resulted in $475 in damages to Gardner’s car.
