trip to the Dells in Wisconsin on Sunday, July 15. Bob and Bernice Miller also went along to help corral the 10 youth. The group camped at Brush Creek Campgrounds in Ontario, Wis., where the fishing was great. The campground’s rain office was a renovated barn built by Neil Olson’s grandfather. The group had an exciting time climbing the bluffs (rock formations) on Friday. On Saturday, the group ventured into Minnesota to see the beautiful Mississippi River. As the photo shows, a barge was going through the locks while the group was there. Other exciting moments were when a giant bee flew into one of the vehicles, scaring one member who is petrified of bees? This happened while driving through Chicago at night. Everyone had a great time, though. Living Gospel church has hog roast The Living Gospel Church members of Nappanee and friends met for a picnic dinner and hog roast in the woods of the pastor, Otto Beer, Jr., and his wife, on Sunday, July 15. Melvin Zimmerman and sons, Tony and Terry, roasted the hog. Rev. Beer read from the Bible and gave a short sermon. A trio of Marie Tom, Sue Neff and Peggy Brown sang songs and hymns. Twelve persons gave their testimony and were baptized in Turkey Creek, which runs in the woods on the Beer farm. Over 100 persons witnessed the event.

Baldwins report from Africa
A letter was recently received at The Mail-Journal from Chuck and Debby Baldwin and their one-year-old daughter, Julie, who are missionaries serving with United World Mission in Florida. Their field address is B.P. 15, Keniebe, via Bamako, Mali, West Africa. Their letter contained the following information: “The days are extremely warm with the hot season upon us, and nights are uncomfortable. How we enjoy the coolness and quietness of the early mornings. It’s during that time that we seek the Lord. It is His love and strength that carry us through the heat. Many of you have been concerned about the water shortage here. How we thank the Lord for His faithfulness in providing for the needs of our Kenieba people. The one deep well in town has supplied water for the population of 6,000 including us. Once our three mission barrels were 76th in line at the pump, but we never went without. In smaller villages, the situation remains critical. Universal hospitality means a cup of water to the passerby, butno longer is that possible in our area. This is sad. A daily joy to us is our new houseboy, Fassega. He has been working for us three months. You might say, long enough to know that Madame likes the pictures on the wall hanging straight and clothes on the line not stretched four feet. Fassega is a Christian, 16 years old. He enjoys working in the house and entertaining Julie as he works. I am teaching him to make bread. Recently there was a tragedy in his family. Two of his younger brothers, about eight years old, went hunting in the bush and got lost. A search continued for days with no luck. I used to think their family was so big, but with two missing it looks small. There are 11 children now. Please pray for Fassega’s growth in the Lord. Perhaps one day he’ll be a pastor. Julie is another daily blessing in our lives. Her first birthsay was a sad day with her two friends missing, but later we celebrated with balloons and ice cream with her many playmates. Julie’s almost walking. She loves to play in water, clap her hands to music, look at books, and shake hands with everyone. Her first experience last week with shoes (on a trial run for vacation) was funny. She admired her legs for the longest time. The past several months have been very difficult for us. We have had a lot of sickness, many responsibilities and headaches and the heat has left us

energyless. Our three-week vacation in the port city of Dakar will be a refreshing change. Hopefully we can gain some weight, too. We need your prayers that our lives might be like a watered garden yielding fruit here. VBS at Grace Brethren on July 23-28 “Exciting times are coming to the Leesburg Grace Brethren Fellowship on July 23-28. Your entire family is invited to attend our all new Vacation Bible School,” said Pastor Howard (“Bud”) Downing. “Now you can add new meaning to your life as you participate in ‘The Wonderful Fair’ featuring ‘God’s Wonderful Surprises,’ this year’s Vacation Bible School theme,” he continued. Pastor Downing added that “The program features challenging life-changing Bible Study, useful crafts and fun-filled game projects, along with songs and \ planned recreation. We want everyone to learn how to grow God’s way as they share the experience of working, playing, learning and loving together.” On Saturday, July 21, at 11 a.m. to ? you are invited to attend “The Wonder Fair Rally.” The fair will include: ring toss, bean bag toss, balloon stomp, darts, boat race, frisbe toss, puppet show and popcorn plus drink. This is a free event and open to the whole family. The Vacation Bible School begins July 23 and continues through July 28. Classes are held at the Leesburg Grace Brethren Church, Corner of Pearl and Church Sts., Leesburg, (across street from Leesburg Elementary School) from 6:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. For more information call 453-3401 or contact Nick Laurino, director, VBS. Rev, and Mrs. Eberly return from Nicaragua
Roger and Mim Eberly of the Bethel Church of the Brethren, Milford, recently returned home from their trip with the “Witness For Peace” organization to Nicaragua. The Eberlys left from Chicago on June 26 enroute to Managua, Nicaragua. Rev. Eberly said as soon as he got off the plane and the group started driving in a bus, he was overwhelmed by the poorness of the country. Oglha Sandman, Downer’s Grove, 111., led thd 9 Eberlys and others from the midwest, including Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, lowa and Illinois. She visited Nicaragua last summer and speaks Spanish fluently, having lived in Mexico for the first 30 years of her life. Rev. Eberly commented, she was a great help in communicating with all the people of Nicaragua. “We were fairly free to go where we wanted,” said Eberly. He said this fact refutes the ac-

cusation that the Nicaraguan Government planned certain people for the group to talk with and meet. The group did have a few homestays. Rev. Eberly stayed with a coffee grower in the Town of Jalapa by the North border. He considered the coffee grower to be slightly wealthier than the average residents and he lived in a three-room home with very few furnishings —a table, two chairs and a cupboard. The diet consisted of rice, beans, tortillas and a few chickens and eggs. Also while in Jalapa, the Secretary of the Government addresssed the group. They also met Roger Gamble fromJthe American Embassy. He told the group before the U.S. will negotiate with Nicaragua, Nicaragua must admit it is selling arms to El Salvador, stop this practice and talk to the Contres (fighters from Honduras, who

Fred Johnson to be at Christian Center
Fred Johnson’s music, “The Soul of Gospel Music,” will be presented next week in the Lakeland area. Johnson will be ministering at Northern Lakes Christian Center, S.R. 13, North Webster, on Monday, July 23, at 7:30 p.m. Johnson sang several years as a soloist with the Jimmy Swaggart television crusade team. He has traveled worldwide in a ministry to reach people of all ages. He has ministered on the Christian Broadcasting Network, Word of Faith and other television and radio programs. He is featured on four albums and his latest recordings include “Fresh Revival” and “Yes, I Know.” Borinn Birmingham, Ala., the 52-year-md evangelist says he feels his ministry is “... to wake people to the need of receiving Christ in their lives before it’s too late.” Pastors of Northern Lakes Christian Center, Thorpe and Karen Mitchell, have both seen Fred Johnson perform and “... each time he’s brought the house down.”

are anti-Sandinista). On their journey to the North Border, where much fighting has been recently, Eberly said they saw soldiers along the way and their group had a jeep escort. To keep their minds off the possibility of fighting, the group sang and had prayer. They visited the town of Ocotal, which was attacked on June 1. The Contres demolished the lumber yard, graineries (ruining a one year’s supply of grain), radio station, power plant and the coffee processing plant. Rev. Eberly is convinced Nicaragua is not a Communist country. He stated the Sandinista’s, who are the strongest party in power right now, are not Communists because of the Christian influence on their lives and the youth participation in the revolution. Nicaragua has 4,632 polling places, which means no one will

have to walk more than five or six kilometers (three or four miles) to vote. After two months of campaigning, the country will vote on November 4. One representative is selected for every 35,000. At the time the Eberlys were in ~ Nicaragua, the country was celebrating the 50 year anniversary since Sandino was assassinated by Somoza. Sandino was the well-loved leader before Somoza, the dictator, took over the country. The people would chant, “50 Years Since Sandino Lives” and “Our Country Free or Death.” In the future, Eberly hopes the Christians are continually en- ’ couraged to keep their faith. Eberly said he plans to write letters to Congress and “... tell the story — what he’s seen and hedrd (in Nicaragua).” “It was a moving, learning experience,” said Eberly summing up his adventure to Nicaragua.
