Maynard Miller Western Rubber Co. Retiree Maynard H. Miller, 77, Goshen, died at Goshen Hospital at 10:30 p.m. Monday, July 2. He had been a patient there since June 17. Born in LaGrange County Feb. 28, 1907, he was the son of Harry and Sarah (Lambright) Miller. He married Mary Alice Kitson in November 1931. She died Dec. 7, 1983. He was a retiree of Western Rubber Co., having worked there 45 years. He had belonged to the Gospel Echoes Temple. Surviving are a son, Maurice (“Maury”) Miller, Goshen; four granchildren; a greatgranddaughter; two sisters, Elizabeth Bontrager and Mrs. Neal (Fannie) Hostetler, both of Goshen; and a brother, Ora Miller, North Webster. Private services were held Thursday at the Yoder-Culp Funeral Home, Goshen, with interment in the Violett Cemetery. Stanley Lung Retired Fanner Stanley E. Lung, 84, r 2 Syracuse, died at his home at 1: 30 p.m. Tuesday, July 3. A retired farmer and lifetime area resident, he was born Sept. 24, 1899, in Elkhart county. He married Erma Dull in 1920. She preceded him in death in 1967. Surviving him are: a son. Dr. Herman Lung, Ligonier; a daughter, Mrs. Betty Rice, Syracuse; five grandchildren; four great-granchildren; and a brother, Wilbur, Cromwell. Services were held Friday in the Orr Funeral Home, with in- / terment in the Oak Park Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the charity*nf the donor’s choice. Ellen Newcomer Sunday School Secretary Mrs. Maurice (Ellen) Newcomer, 76, Nappanee, died in Elkhart General Hospital at 4:05 a m. Wednesday. July 4. Born July 29, 1907. she was a daughter of Isaac and Iva .(Smith) Krull. She was married to Maurice Newcomer June 19, 1926, in Nappanee A member of the Union Center Church of the Brethren, she was for many years the secretary of the Golden Rule Sunday School Class. Melvin, 65, r 1 Leesburg, was dead at the scene of the accident in which her husband, Myron, 67, and two grandchildren, Ben Melvin, 8, and Amanda Melvin, 13, were injured. Regarding the accident which occured at the intersection of SR 114 and 15, state police say the truck was southbound on SR 15 at approximately 40 mph, when it struck the car. The auto was westbound op SR 114. Mrs. Melvin died from massive head and chest injuries. He suffered burns to the legs in a fire and is continuing daily outpatient treatments at the hospital. HOWARD BEER STILL SERIOUS Howard Beer, r 2 box 9, Milford, who underwent open heart surgery last Wednesday, is still in serious condition. On Monday evening, July 9, his condition was listed as critical. He is stable again now. Mr. Beer is in the South Bend Memorial Hospital. BJELLA HOME Dallas Bjella, Milford, has returned home following a eight-week stay in the Goshen Hospital. He is reported as doing well, however cannot leave his home at this time. Bjella was burned in a welding mishap while at work. Births WEISLER. RIDING AGAINST DIABETES — Eric and Maureen Mould, with daughter Cara, are presently riding across the United States in a fund raising project against diabetes. The family started the 2,700 mile journey from South Bend a month ago, with their final destination set for Seattle, Wash., later this month. Mrs. Mould, who has had diabetes since age six. and has lost much of her eye sight, is joined by her husband and five-year old-Cara. A former school teacher, Mrs. Mould is now employed by World Book, Inc. Along with the bike built-for-three, the Moulds wil| also have a motorhome alongside throughout the journey. It will be used for a group of lectures the couple plans on giving throughout their trip. Mrs. Mould said that the money raised will go for diabetes education social services and research. Schueler, 62, 4501 North Washington Road, Fort Wayne, was involved in an accident at 6:58 p.m. Saturday, near South Shore Golf Course. He received a bump to the head and advised he would go to Kosciusko Community Hospital for a check up. Also injured was his wife, Louise Schueler, 62. Schueler advised he would take her to the hospital for treatment also. Carissa McCullough, four, r 3 box 483 Syracuse, was brought on station at 4:31 p.m. Sunday, July 8, after being injured while playing on a swing set. Her mother advised she would take her to the hospital for treatment. The ambulance transported Roy Miller, 62, r 4 box 52 Syracuse, to Goshen Hospital, Monday morning, July 9. The ambulance was called at 12:03 a.m., after he became ill. Chris Ringler, nine, r 3 box 604 Syracuse, was taken to Goshen Hospital following a car/pedestrian mishap at 4:55 p.m. Monday, July 9, one-fourth mile south of Wawasee High School on the Syra-Web Road. Ringler suffered abrasions on the side of his right shoulder and contusion on the right collar bone. Frances McDonald, 78, r 3 Box 55 Syracuse, was transported to Goshen Hospital after becoming ill. The ambulance was called at 7:05 a.m. Tuesday, July 10. David W. Haifley, 83, 71570 CR 35 Syracuse, was taken to Goshen Hospital after he became ill. The EMS was called at 7:42 a.m. on Tuesday. Car explodes but no injuries reported Milford firemen responded to a call at 4:55 p.m. on July 7 when a 1971 Oldsmobile, owned by Sharon Joyce, Syracuse, caught fire on 1100 N, southeast of Milford. Shiela Grevenstuck, the daughter of the owner, was driving the car at the time. It had been leaking gasoline before it ignited. The 10 men and three pieces of equipment that responded to the fire were unable to prevent the total loss of the vehicle. There were no injuries reported. On thrill rides Since 1981, an average of nearly 10,000 people a year have been injured on amusement park rides, almost a 50 percent increase from 1960, the year before federal authority in the area was cut back. 43 dump sites The EPA has failed to include 43 “sufficiently dangerous” toxic waste dumps in 11 states on a priority cleanup list, a laborenvironmental coalition said recently.

MINOR ACCIDENT — A car driven by Robin Haab, Syracuse, struck the bicycle of seven-year-old Lance Valthis of Milford. Friday, July 6. The accident happened on First Street in Milford. „ According to Milford police reports, the young Valthis was riding his bike northbound on First Street when he failed to stop at the intersection of West and First. Miss Haab made an attempt to miss the youth, but struck the bike from the side. Valthis, who received lacerations to his head and arms, was treated by the Milford EMS crew at the scene and was later transported to Goshen General Hospital. Syracuse Fire Department was called to a possible house fire and a car fire in separate instances on Tuesday, July 10. Carol Koble, Medusa St., Syracuse, contacted the fire department at 12:06 p.m. when an electrical short occurred in her home. Fire officials found a fan switch that had overheated but no further fire was located. Mrs. Koble stated she would contact the building contractor for further checks on the circuits. Damage was estimated at SIOO. At 4:49 p.m. the fire department was called to First Federal Savings and Loan, Wawasee
