Winona Lake: Yesterday and today
By CLARENCE MCNEIL Guest Feature Writer The preacher stands with one foot on the pulpit and the other on the piano. He is wildly waving a chair in the air. In the midsummer heat he has discarded his coat, tie and finally his shirt. Is he an escapee from a mental institution?, No way. Billy Sunday is a national herd? When a group of churches invite him to come to their city many thousands welcome him at the train station. He will be the honored guest of the highest level of society. The Pennsylvania "thru'' train ordinarily by-passed Winona .Lake. If Billy Sunday was a passenger it would stop for him. He and “Ma" Sunday would be driven to their hilltop home at 1111 Sunday Lane. Equally famous as song leader for Billy Sunday was Homer Rodeheaver. He was a genius in bringing an audience to an immediate rapport His trademark was a trombone used as the people sang. Both of these men have memorials honoring them on Park Avenue in Winona Lake The Billy Sunday Tabernacle is like the wood structures hastily put up when he was invited to a large city. Unpainted wood benches seat 7,500. The most famous feature of the tabernacle is the sawdust aisle. "Hitting the sawdust trail" was one of Sunday’s phrases that caused the press to call his speech gutter language. However that same language brought over 7,500 people down that sawdust trail in one day. For the first time in decades the 1983 graduating class of War-

saw Community High School voted to not have their ceremonies in the Tabernacle. One can understand why the seniors would not want their gown and shoes decorated with sawdust. The Homer Rodeheaver Auditorium stands at the comer of Ninth Avenue. Dedicated in 1959 it replaced an older wood structure. Reflecting the decline in attendance and interest since the glory days the seating capacity is 1,200. Three factors have combined to bring about that decline. First it was the automobile, then radio and now TV. The Billy Sunday home is now a museum. It is the same as when "Ma" Sunday died on February 20, 1957. The only time it opens now is during the Moody Conference the first week of July. Arrangements can be made at other times for tour groups through the Winona Hotel. Rodeheaver had a spacious home at Rainbow Point on Winona Lake. Entertaining was frequent on an enormous enclosed porch providing a splendid view of many golden sunsets. He shared the home with his sister Ruth rodeheaver Thomas and her husband Jim Thomas. Upon the death of Mr. Thomas the home was put up for auction. A real estate developer wanted to replace it with a condominium project. Dismayed at the possible destruction of this historic home Dr Stephen Grill and his wife Elaine, a real estate broker, bought it. A typical Sunday campaign ended on April 19, 1914, in Scranton, Pa. It was officially declared Billy Sunday Day — 20,000 admirers formed a huge parade to

bid farewell at the railroad station. Total attendance exceeded 734,000 during the Seven weeks - 18,321 people “hit the sawdust trail" including the wealthiest man in town. On April 18, 1914, just one day before the above parade a calamity struck Winona Lake. Some leaves burning south of the hotel got out of control. Fanned by a breeze they raced upto the cottages on Chestnut Street igniting each one up to Fourth Street. There are still black marks on the basement concrete of thg, present owner of this home, former Town Marshal Carl Jacobson\ Only the northeast corner of thei home was burned Every home north of Jacobson’s and Fourth Street was gutted. The hotel however was saved. Also in 1914 William Jennings Bryan that titan of politics and Christianity spoke on the Chatauqua schedule. His autographed picture hangs in the Sunday museum along with five United States presidents, high government officials and celebrities of ’ every kind. “Ma” Sunday avidly collected every written, photographed and published item of the Sunday ministry. In 1978 the Billy Graham Center sorted 32 file boxes of Sunday memorabilia for microfilming. This microfilm is available at the Billy Graham Center in Wheaton, 111., and the Morgan Library of Grace College supervised by Head Librarian robert D. Ibach, Jr. There is no doubt there can never be another man even closely resembling the inimitable William Ashley Sunday.

VACATION fill IDF- TRAVFI THF RfiAH TO FAITH AC WFII AC FUN
V flVfl I IVZI w I liOI laaLa II IL if] or many of us, it is time for our annual escape from all the cares, and chores and routines of our lives during the rest of the year. , We will head for the mountains, the seashore, the desert, the woods; or perhaps other cities of the nation and the world. However, we should rejoice in the fact that God never takes a vacation, because we want Him for our traveling companion; to watch over us and see us safely home again. We should seek His guidance and protection at a House of Worship along the way; be it our own or any other kind, in a very small town. If our destination is a wilderness area, the Bible will sustain us; particularly if the surrounding terrain happens to resemble that described in many of the sacred passages. It will serve to remind us that God made everything we see on earth. Thus, wherever we go we experience the beauty of His creation and the ever-presence of His love.
