PERFECT PICNIC SPOT — The gazebo is shown with picnic tables and the playground off to the left at Vinegar Bend. An enclosed building with tables and chairs and lots of room make it the setting of many weddings, reunions, parties and picnics for groups and organizations. (Photos by Jo Sturgis)
Vinegar Bend is private park jon the shores of the Tippecanoe River
Bv JO STURGIS Staff Writer Secluded in a wooded area along the banks of the Tippecanoe River, just off S.R. 15. North oCWSrsaw is a private park named “Vinegar Bend.” Vinegar Bend “just kinda happened” 10-12 years ago. when Don (“Wop”) Anglin and his son, Kaye, used to camp along the Tippecanoe River at the back of the Anglin property, said Kaye Anglin. The Anglins threw a couple of parties and then it got so bad, they -had to move their campers out. People started calling, wanting to use the facilities for picnics, parties, reunions, etc. Now, Don and sons, Kaye and Hap have succumbed to just maintaining the facilities. They camp elsewhere. Today, organizations, factories, social clubs, churches, nursing homes and the Boy

Scouts along with numerous weddings rent the facilities. Kaye remarked, “The funny thing is, we never advertised, now we’re booked full all the time.” Activities available include volleyball, basketball, softball, swings, a playground, canoeing, hayrides, horseshoes, swimming and lots of good roaming ground. The first building present on Vinegar Bend was a barn. Now the park boasts a gazebo with picnic tables and chairs, a room called “Vinegar Bend Hotel,” which is enclosed with tables and chairs, a bar, fireplace, pot belly stove and restrooms, swings and all the playground equipment. Some of the lumber used in the buildings came from Yellow Bank's Hotel in North Webster, said Kaye Anglin. The Anglins also own Anglin Signs at the entrance of Vinegar Bend. Along one wall of the sign shop are news clippings of dis-
ferent groups and weddings that have been held at the park. Kaye said at least 20 weddings have been held at Vinegar Bend. The two largest groups Kaye remembers were Hattie and Duck’s Turtle Roast and R.R. Donnelly’s, Warsaw. The most interesting group Kaye remembers is the countywide Boy Scouts, who came one winter and held a Klondike Derby. The Scouts made sleds and pulled them with victims aboard, across a finish line. The adventure was a lesson in safety. After the victims were pulled across the finish line, they were treated for cuts, bruises and broken bones. The hardier Scouts camped out all night in 15 degree below zero weather. “We tried to shut the park down in the winter, but they just don’t leave us alone,” said Kaye. Snowmobile groups come out and for two Christmases, a family has had its Christmas dinner at the park. Vinegar Bend consists of 20 acres — more or less. It got its name because Don Anglin, the father, liked; the 1950 s major league baseball player, nicknamed “Vinegar Bend” Mizelle. The family decided this name wasn’t “Too sweet or too sour,” SQ the name was adopted. “Wop” Anglin, 71 years old, enjoys the park and the people who visit it. He drives the tractor for most of the hayrides. His family calls him “the wagon master.” Kaye Anglin commented there used to be lots more canoes, but now all the fallen trees and debris in the water have really cut down on the canoeing. They’re really anxious for the river to be cleaned up, like they’ve heard it might be. “The thing that makes it (Vinegar Bend) a good place ‘o come, is you can relax,” said Kaye. "People feel way away from things and really they’re only five minutes from town. Anything goes at Vinegar Bend. They say you can move anything that isn’t nailed down or bolted down. And from the looks of their wide variety of groups on this summer’s calendar, anything does go. China and Olympics China expressed surprise at the Soviet Union’s withdrawal from the 1984 Olympic Ganies and indicated that it still planned to send 200 Chinese athletes to Los Angeles to compete. ,
