wn .. J .. ■ f- IB KING OF SPORTS — George Kelly, an assistant football coach at the University of Notre Dame, was inducted into the International Palace of Sports Hall of Fame, Saturday, June 30. Kelly, who began his coaching career at South Bend St. Joesph High School, later moved on to Marquette University and later to the University of Nebraska where he served as defensive coach for Bob Devaney. In 1969 he joined the Notre Dame coaching staff, as a defensive coach. The 54-year old Kelly will begin his 16th season with the Fighting Irish this season. Throughout his lifetime, Kelly has devoted himself to instilling the highest form of credibility within the youth of America. Syracuse Sroufe scored a total of 56 runs en route to a 3-0 record in Syracuse T-ball action last week. Sroufe downed Thornburg’s 20- on June 26, breezed by TShirts 24-11 on June 28 and nipped Butler’s by the score of 12-11 on June 29. In other action on June 26, Butler’s defeated Gropp’s 28-16, Love downed Cocinero’s 16-14 and Augsburger’s beat T-Shirts 19-12. On June 28, Love downed Augsburger’s 18-11, Thornburg’s beat Gropp’s 27-19 and Cocinero’s blasted Butler’s 23-15. On June 29, Love squeaked by Gropp’s 22-21 and Thornburg’s tripped Augsburger’s 19-18. Milford The Phillies won two games in the past week to raise their record to 4-2 and move into second place in the girls’ minor league standings. The Phils, behind Denise Tillotson’s double and single, beat the Mets 18-5. Erika Lange and Wendy West each had two hits as the Phils handed the Dodgers their first loss of the season, 16-13. Mindy Beatty had four hits for the Dodgers. In other action, Anna Myers had three hits to lead the Padres to a 14-12 win over the Mets. Jill Williams had three singles for the losers. Standings Dodgers 5-1 Phillies 4-2 Padres 2-4 Mets 1-5 In youth league contests, the Cubs posted two wins to raise their league-leading record to 64). Joe Harwood had two hits to lead the Cubs to a 12-3 rout of the A’s. Lonnie Bray’s triple accounted for the winning RBI in the Cubs’ 6-2 win over the Cards. In other action, the Pirates’ Matt Haab and Chad Berkeypile combined to shutout the. Astros 64). The Pirates also beat the Orioles 10-2 behind Jared Beer’s double and two singles. Standings Cubs 6-0 Pirates 4-2 Cards 2-3 Orioles 2-3 A’s 2-4 Astros 1-5 The Braves blasted the Pirates 21- to remain unbeaten in girls’ major league play. Barbette Roberts and Saby Vale each had three hits for the 6-0 Braves. Donna Miller had four hits for the losers.
The Sox unleashed a potent offensive attack to down the Giants 15-2. Rhonda Stookey had a home run and Darla Moore and Diane Hoover each had three hits for the winners. Evelyn Stricklin had thre«,hits for the Giants. The Pirates also turned on their offense in a 14-10 win over the Sox. Kristin Roberts had a single and two doubles for the winners. Standings Braves 6-0 Sox 3-3 Giants 1-4 Pirates 1-4 In T-ball action, the A’s downed the Cubs 22-9, the Angels nipped the Royals 10-8, the Cards flew by the Orioles 23-14 and the Astros beat the Yankees 29-24. Players of the week were Bruce Tillotson (A’s), Brian Hartman (Cubs), Chris Henson (Angels), Amberly Hobbs (Royals), Ryan Kaiser (Cards), Jason Price (Orioles), Adam Davis (Astros) and Jenny Sorensen (Yankees). Big Boulder Belles Evelyn Orn recorded the low gross score in league competition at Big Boulder on Wednesday, June 27. Other winners were Suzie Knepp, second tow gross, low putts and second low net; Evelyn Prn, tow putts and tow net; Leatrice Rapp, second tow putts and second tow net; and Barbara Schultz, second tow putts. The public is invited to a mixed scramble on Friday, July 20, with tee-off scheduled between 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. A potluck dinner and awards will follow completion of play.
