By ROY GRIMES \ Wildlife Biologist Indiana Division Os Fish & Wildlife Not long ago I read an article entitled “Bambi Can Kill” It appeared in a California Natural Resources publication and told of various instances where tame, pet or captive deer had severely injured and even killed humans. One such example: “Colin Robert Neu was only five years old when Bambi killed him The boy and his father were feeding potato chips to a young male deer at Yosemite National Park when the deer suddenly snatched the bag of chips away from Colin When the child tried to grab "it back the deer pinned Colin to the ground with one of its nine-inch antlers “ The other horror tales in the article are similar and a good nurnber involve children as victims The point of the article is that wild animals are not intended to be pets. It is not good for them and can be dangerous to anyone who associates with them. We simply must fight that urge we get to become wildlife parent whenever we encounter a young animal. So. serious is this matter that it is actually illegal to have in captivity, without a permit, song birds, game species, hawks, owls, and other protected

wildlife Problems and costly fines can result for those who choose to ignore this regulation. Otherwise well meaning people often cause problems for wildlife simply because they don’t realize a few facts. Rabbits, for example, are on their own when they leave their nest two weeks or so after being born. They don’t even need their real mother much less a human one! In other cases, specifically deer, wild mothers often leave their youngsters hidden while they feed or conceal themselves nearby. Although! it may appear to be the case, the animal has not been abandoned. Those youngsters that do need to stay with their parent or parents are taught valuable lessons in survival. When placed in captivity those that manage to overcome inadequate food, feeding schedules, or other substandard care almost can never be returned to the wild. They just never learned such things as how to hunt for food, avoid danger, or even how to seek shelter during bad weather. Not only are they dependent upon humans fpr all future needs, they can cause a world of problems. The National Academy of Sciences reports that the most common denominator in animal attacks on humans involves pet animals that have matured and become suddenly antagonistic. There is also the very real possibility of disease or parasite transmittance, such as rabies, tularemia (rabbit fever), distemper, raccoon roundworm, etc., to either us or our pets and livestock. What can you do if you encounter a young animal? In some cases there are ways to help. If a baby bird, *for example, has fallen from its nest, place it back. If the whole nest has fallen, place the young and the nest in a strawberry carton and wire that back up in the tree or bush. In most cases the parents will return to properly , care for the young. In other cases you must simply accept the fact that not all animals are intended to survive. In fact, sick, diseased or otherwise unhealthy young are sometimes deserted by their parents on purpose. Those, in turn, become food for scavengers and those animals who must have meat to survive. Nothing is wasted in nature. The wildlife reproduction cycle has already begun for another year. Enjoy observing the new wildlife youngsters but do them and yourselves a favor by allowing them to remain wild.
