Four city parks at Syracuse
The Syracuse Parks and Recreation Department has made a number of improvements to each of the town's four parks. Park board members have been busy installing new playground equipment at Lakeside Park and the city beach. The new equipment, according to park board president Alan Kitson, is a wood module with a slide and climbing apparatus. In addition threfe new swings were added and a large slide and other equipment for older children. Last year work was completed on the improvement to the beach area. This year the improvements will include adding camp stoves and benches for picnic use and remodeling of the restrooms facilities yet this spring. Lakeside Park, located on W.E. Long Dr., is a large park with plenty of room for family picnics, reunions and all types of summer games. The concession stand will be open this year. Kitson commented the use of all facilities on the park are free of charge with plenty of parking space. Railroad Park on Medusa Street will soon have a new name. Park board members will be renaming the park at the June 4 meeting. This park, which is basically a boat launch for area fishermen, is used by numerous employees of the area as a place to quietly enjoy their lunches. nel. The park board will be installing new picnic tables at this park. The third Syracuse park is located on SR 13 and known as Crosson Mill. It is also the site of the Syracuse Scout Cabin, which, houses various community activities. Picnic* tables were added last year with two additional tables being installed this year. The park features/labeled trees for nature enthusiast and curious park goers alike. This park also offers fishing above and below the Turkey Creek Dam, for those who don’t want to venture out into the lake. The fourth Syracuse park is Hoy’s Beach, located on Front Street. This park includes a small beach, however, there is no lifeguard on duty. Overseeing park activities are the following park board members: Kitson, president; Kip Schumm, vice president; Diana Walker, secretary; Pat Bartow, treasurer; Dr. Howard Hull, school representative and ex officio member; and Dave Gargett, representative. Kitson remarked Jim Garner will be the groundskeeper again this year, making sure the parks are kept in tip top shape. The Syracuse parks are available for anyone to enjoy and all are encouraged to utilize the city facilities.
MAD to hold Memorial Day BBQ
The Milford Area Development Council will again be holding a chicken barbecue this Memorial Day. The barbecue, which will be prepared by Nelson’s Golden Glow, will begin at 11 a.m. and continue until the 1,200 chicken halves are sold. Members of MAD will be preparing baked beans, applesacue, celery, carrots, bread, butter and a drink to be served as dinners. Carry-out orders of chicken only will also be available. During the barbecue, the Milford Youth League Boosters will be having a bake sale in front of the community building.
