Better fishing days ahead
Early reports of the 1984 fishing season on area lakes has been discouraging to fishermen. An unusual weather span has made fishing in the northern Indiana Lakes Region tougher than normal. Illustrating the poor fishing conditions was the bass tournament held on Lake Wawasee, May 12-13. What little success acheived by the fishermen was due to relying on the smaller size fish )vhen caught. “They hardly had enough fi£h to weigh,” said Linda Waterson.rThey were taking the minimum size limit in order to bring the fish in.” The biggest problem that fishermen have encountered is that the water is below nor-

mal. The unpredictable weather has caused this problem, but it should be straightened out within a couple of weeks. Although fishermen on Lake Wawasee have struggled so far, others are enjoying some success at Lake Papakeechie. “People have been pulling some bass out of Lake Papakeechie,” stated Mrs. Waterson. “But it is awful hard to get on the lake to fish.” Evon Foyle from Dewart Marina, echoed Mrs. Waterson’s statements concerning the low temperature. “We have had a slim number of fishermen, compared to previous years,” said Mrs. Foyle. “But those who have fished have been able to catch some crappie and blue gill.” Bass on the other hand, have been tough to catch. She added, “The 42 degree water temperature is too cold for bass.” Presently fishing in Kosciusko County has been less than desirable. Still, Mrs. Foyle remains optimistic that better days are still ahead. “Fishing is lousy right now,” confirmed Mrs. Foyle. “But it won’t stay that way too much longer.”
