Area communities have thriving youth leagues
Playing summer baseball or softball has been an important part of growing up for generations of Americans. Parents as well as the youngsters themselves find enjoyment in watching a game on a warm summer day. The communities of Milford, North Webster and Syracuse have thriving youth league programs. It is due to the hard work of many volunteers that summer baseball provides fun for everyone. Milford Over 300 youngsters are involved in Milford’s youth league program. There are five different levels of play in the Milford league, including children from kindergarten age all the way through eighth grade. The Milford Boosters sponsor youth league action. Officers for this year are Hubert and Beth Krull, president; Don and Kathy Beer, vice president; Dan and Diane Schrock, secretary; and Ron and Diane Schwartz, treasurer. Kent Doty, Gary Sorensen and Ron Douglas serve as directors for the league. The girls’ teams are divided into two divisions; girls’ minor and major leagues. There are four teams in the girls’ minor league, which covers those in grades three through five. Four teams are entered in the girls’ major league, which includes those in sixth through eighth grades. T-ball is designed for students in kindergarten through second grade. There are eight teams active in this league. The Little League, which involves students in grades three through sfix, has six teams. There are also 20 boys involved in Milford’s pony League team. Play begins with the annual Memorial Day weekeend tournament May 26, 27 and 28. The championship games will be contested on Monday, May 28. The regular schedule of games begins Tuesday, May 29. North Webster The North Webster youth program is administered by a board of directors, of which Harold Mickley is the president. treasurer; and board members Sam Lundy, Don GUy, Bev Jewson and Lester Wright. The North Webster Little League, consisting of major and minor leagues, has a total of five teams. Sixty players will participate in the two leagues, which begin on June 4. ijhe Little League also has a traveling team which plays an eight-game schedule. This team will have its first game on June 6, and will play the majority of its contests on Wednesday nights. Girls’ softball is also divided into two leagues. There are three teams in both the Major and minor divisions and play will be conducted on Tuesday and Thursday nights, beginning June 5. A girls’ traveling team has also been organized. The T-ball program will get underway with practice sessions on June 11. Doug Hoffert is in charge of the T-ball program. He ■will be assisted by Rob Jewson. Although no firm figures have been set, Hoffert expects to have between four and six teams in the league. Each team will play 10 games after the season begins on June 26. Tball will be contested on Tuesday and Thursday nights. All games for the North Webster leagues will be played at the North Webster Youth League diamond.
Syracuse
The Syracuse program is being administered by the Youth Service Committee of the Kiwanis Club. Members of the committee are Mike Seaster, president; Steve" Hasse, secretary; Mike Tallon, treasurer; and members Butch Firestone, Larry Martindale and Greg Long. At the present time, eight teams are
assigned to the T-ball league for children ages five through eight. Each team will play a 14-game schedule at Vega Field. Action begins on June 5 and runs Tuesday and Thursday nights until July 12. Forty girls between the ages of eight and 13 have been divided into four teams for play in the softball league. In addition, a girls' traveling team has been organized. The traveling team will play its games at Rotary Field and the regular softball league games will be held at Vega Field. There are 40 boys signed up for play in the major division of the Little League. Fiftyfive boys are signed up for the minor division. Play in both these leagues begins the week of June 4 and will take place at Rotary Field. The boys’ traveling team will also play at Rotary Field. Girls’ and boys’ leagues will run until the second week of July. An awards night will be held during the third week of July.
