The park board has received SIOO,OOO in a matching grant from the federal government. The park area will have 400 feet of4ake frontage, which is currently at the park, with a 4,500 square foot deck added onto the existing pavilion. Four cabins and the Nellessen home will be removed from the area and a playground and picnic area. The public beach and park will be totally handicapped accessible.

If pledges raised —

North Webster Public Beach to be opened next summer

There will be no activity at the North Webster Public Beach this summer, but it is hoped next summer, area residents will be able to enjoy the new beach and park area. Dixie Pryor, park board president, said the park board intends to purchase Dixie Haven from Walter and Eileen Nellessen, owners, as 'Soon as SIOO,OOO in pledges has been received\ The park board already has been promise4d SIOO,OOO in matching funds from the government. The purchase price, agreed upon, is SIBO,OOO. ' She said work may start this summer with the seawall and deck, if pledges can be raised towards the purchase price. To date over $40,000 has been raised. Park board members are hoping to put the beach area in this winter. All permits have been received. Dixie Remains Mrs. Pryor commented the plans call for the Dixie boat to remain docked next to the swimming area. “The Dixie is a part of North Webster’s history,” stated Mrs. Pryor, adding the board does not want the history lost. Plans for the beach area, which covers 100 feet of the 400-foot lake frontage, call for minor changes to the current property. The removal of four cottages and the Nellessen’s home are the only major changes. The location of the current cabins and home will be used for picnic and playground area. Mrs. Pryor noted none of the trees will be destroyed. “We want to keep it like it is as much as possible.” The building used for storage will be remodeled for a restroom and shower area for the beach. A sidewalk from the pavilion to the beach area, including a ramp into the swimming area for the handicapped, will be added. The pavillion, which is already handicapped equipped, will be used as a covered picnic and snack bar area. A 4,500 square-foot

deck will be added onto the lake side of the pavillion and extend over the lake. The railing on the deck will be designed for handicapped use. This deck area will be used for fishing and sunning. There will be an area for handicapped boat boarding. Mrs. Pryor remarked the whole beach area will be handicapped accessible and it has been said it will be the only park of its type in Northern Indiana. There is ample parking space across the street from the park with designated handicapped parking. Mrs. Pryor continued by saying, the park and beach area came about through a Nor-th-Webster-Tippecanoe Township questionnaire last year when 80 percent of the replies requested a public beach area. Those working with Mrs. Pryor on the park board and who will be deciding a name for the park include: Karilyn Metcalf, Lois Lundy, Becky Rhodes and Phil Payne. As it stands today the future of the North Webster Public Beach relies on the residents of the town and township to raise the needed pledges. $ Anyone who wishes to donate money or make a pledge may contact any of the park board members, the International Palace of Sports or Steve Beavers.
