Refurbishing continues at Waubee Lake Park

Waubee Lake’s Park Board, seeking improvements to its park, has spent a lot of time and money refurbishing the local park. “We’ve re-roofed the park pavilion, which was a major job,” said park board member Marion Acton. “We want to make this park a place where people can come and enjoy themselves.” Other changes made by the board include the installation of new gates at the entrance to the park. Also, the implementing of barbecue grills and additional picnic tables is underway. Another effort to brighten up the park was the removal of several dead trees, and reclaiming of some property south of the park. “We realize the park will be used more if we take car*e of it,” said Acton. “The effort has been made, and now we hope people take advantage of the park.” The park also offers a nice playground area for the children, along with equipment they can use. The concession stand will also be in opertation throughout the summer. Besides the “facelift” to the park, Acton

pointed out the park will continue to enforce that no alcohol or dogs be allowed on park grounds. In addition, a 10 p.m. closing time will also be enforced this year. “Right now we are in the process of putting up a line to rope off the swimming area,” said Acton. The rope serves as a protection to the sudden drop-off from the sand bar. The park board is led by President Bill Stath. Jodi Brown serves as secretary, w'hile Brent Kaiser and Acton are board members.

Use common sense when swimming in area lakes

The arrival of the summer season means fun and frolic time; however, in the Lakeland area, as well as anywhere else, common sense and safety are important when it comes to swimming. Here are some tips and reminders to be aware of when getting ready to enter the water: Never swim alone. Always use the buddy system. Don’t over-eat before swimming and always allow at least one hour after eating to avoid cramps in the legs and arms. Before entering the water, be aware of conditions which exist in the area. It’s a good idea to ask other swimmers about depth and characteristics of the lake bottom.
