SUMMER Summer reading program at all 3 area libraries
Public Libraries in Syracuse, North Webster and Milford have activities planned throughout the summer for the Children. The following are the activities planned. Syracuse Bonnie Bjella, children’s librarian at Syracuse Public Library announces the summer reading club will begin on June 4. This year’s theme is “Shuttle To The Stars. ’’ All children participating will receive a sticker for each book read during the program which ends August 11. The first 75 children to enroll will be receiving a button stating they belong to the library reading club. Enrollment may begin, on June 1 with the reading to start on June 4.1 Children reading one book or more will ■ receive a ribbon at the end of the program and those reading 10 or more books will be awarded a reading certificate and a ribbon. The summer reading club is open to children in grades one through five and preschoolers if the parents desire. North Webster North Webster-Tippecanoe township Public Library will be having two basic summer programs for children in the area according to Dean McFadden, librarian. Every Wednesday there will be a short story hour at 10:30 for children of all ages. This year’s program will be given by McFadden. The summer reading contest will kick-off on Friday, May 25, shortly after school is dismissed for the year. A party with cookies and punch will be given for those interested in signing up for the contest. The contest will be for children preschool through eighth grade with eight categories and eight different awards. The categories are first and below, second and third grade, fourth and fifth, and sixth through eighth. Each child will be placed in the category of the grade he or she has just completed. categories will be separated between boys and girls. The contest will’conclude approximately one-week prior to the start of school. Milford "Aim For the Stars — React” is the theme for Milford Library’s summer reading program for children ages three through fifth grade. Donna Anglin, children’s librarian, remarked various programs will be provided throughout the summer in addition to the summer reading contest. Those participating will be divided into three groups, Space Cadets, for three-year-olds to kindergarten; who will receive credit fpr each book read to them; Moonbeams, first and second graders; and All Stars, third through fifth grade. Those in the contest will start reading on June 4 and the last day will be August 11. Somethinl new this year is that each child in the contest must keep track of his or her own number of books read. Mrs. Anglin remarked that nine planets will be used with each planet representing a certain number of books read by the individual. Each time a goal has been reached rewards will be given. After reaching a certain point Mrs. Anglin has worked out a Space Cipher Alphabet which those individuals will have a chance to solve. Handouts will be available in the library for each level of individuals participating and include puzzles, projects, information and various other items. Programs for the summer will be at 1 p.m. on the following dates: June 13 — Astronomy Society will be presenting slides and show equipment used June 27 — Make solar cookies July 11 — Space race relay July 25 — Make space monsters August 15 — The viewing of the movie “Star Wars.” This will also be the close of the reading program and tfte top achievers in each group will be recognized.
