SUMMER Lakeland Youth Center busy place in summer
Youth Center will be bustling with activities this summer, whether it is classes or being used for fund raisers, meetings, receptions or reunions. Jill Stanley, director, announced the following classes: Senior citizen exercise, gymnastics, roller skating, free time, coaches' clinic for soccer referees and helpers, and judo. All classes will begin after June 4 and end by July 26. The youth center director stated that all activities will be postponed during the week of July 4. Gymnastics classes will be divided into three groups, meeting at the lakeland Youth Center for 6 weeks. The will begin on June 11 and classes will be held daily The beginner’s class will meet at 9:30 a m. This class is for those who are school age and have never had gymnastic lessons or formal training in the class. They will learn the basic fundamentals of tumbling, bars, beam and movement. The advanced beginners/intermediate’s class will be at 10:30. The advanced beginner’s class is for those who have passed the beginner’s class with some kind of lessons or a good natural ability and agility The student should be able to do a forward roll, walk across the beam unassisted, attempt a cartwheel and be able to do basic moves on the lower uneven bar. Intermediate students are those who have passed the advanced beginner’s class and are able to do a cartwheel, roundoff, attempted a front and back walkover, do a penny drop unassisted on the uneven bars; do a forward roll on the beam, attempt a front handspring with a spotter, a cartwheel on the beam alone, and several skills on the uneven bars. The compulsory class will meet at 11:30 a m. This class is where students will learn the basic steps to a routine, items that must be included in a routine, what the judges look for and putting a routine together. Other Classes An advanced gymnastics class, taught by Fred Myers, will be on Tuesday beginning June 5 and ending July 17. This class is for the very advanced gymnastics students. The beginner’s class, meeting from 4-5 p.m., requires participants to be able to do a backhandspring; the intermediate class, meeting from 5-6 p.m., requires participants to be able to do a roundoff backh'andspring; and the advanced class, meeting from 6-7 p.m., requires participants to be able to do a roundoff backhandspring well and be working into doing the back handspring sumersault. A senior citizens exercise class will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 9 a.m. This class has all its activities done from chairs to work on joints, co-or-dination, balance, stretching, heart rate, relaxation and common sense exercise. All participants are asked to check with their doctor before joining the class. In addition to exercise it is also a time for discussion and socialization. Roller Skating on Thursdays from 2-4 p.m. and a free time on Tuesday from 2-4
will be available on a trial period. If there is no response in two weeks these two activities will be cancelled. During the late summer a coaches’, clinic for soccer referees and helper^ 1 will be provided. The clinj£ will be held to work with volunteers who will be working with soccer teams and learn the rules and regulations of the game. Judo classes will be offered each Thursday, beginning June 7 from 7-8:30 p.m. in the youth center. Tim Stouder will instruct the class. This class is for those wanting to get some basic self-defense training. Watch for the summer brochure with registration information, costs for the class for the classes and additional information.
Championships coming to Camelot Lakes
Camelot Lakes will be the site of the this summer’s Midwest Regional Championships of the American Waterskiing Association. The August 3, 4 and 5 event is expected to draw close to 300 skiers from 13 surrounding states. This is the second time the championships have been hosted in this area. Camelot Lakes was also the site of, the 1982 tournament. Organizational work for the event is being handled by the Camelot Lakes Ski Team and the Indiana State Ski Club. Judges, scorers and drivers will be from the area as well as from several surrounding states. Local people working at the championships include Clark and Sue Smith, who will help with boat driving and scoring; John and Barb Miller, who will serve as judge and scorer; and Don Bucher, who will be a boat driver and judge. Skiers will compete in a total of 13 separate divisions. Entrants may compete in slalom, ticks and jumping or any combination of the three categories. The top three finishers in each division will advance to the national championships on August 13-19 in Zacharv, La. In addition to the Midwest Regionals, Camelot Lakes will be the site of two local ski tournaments on July 14-15 and August 11-12. These events are sponsored by the Camelot Lakes Ski Team and will attract skiers from four to five surrounding states. The local tournaments are the first stepping stone to competition on the regional or national level; A skier must earn points in the local tournaments in order to qualify for the regional level. Skiers who earn three Exceptional Performance Ratings at local tournaments may also advance to the national level. Camelot Lakes are located just off the Syracuse-Milford road.
