Warrior fourth in NLC meet
By TOM CHARLES Sports Editor The Warrior boys’ track team tuned up for Thursday night’s sectional meet with a runner-up finish in the East Noble Relays on Tuesday night. Wawasee tallied 70 points, losing by 22 points to champion East Noble. Wawasee’s top performance of the night came in the shuttle hurdle relay where the team of Ron Schwartz, Steve Galegor, Brian Popenfoose and Mike Goodspeed finished first. The foursome turned in a time of 60.7 seconds. Two Warrior relay teams picked up seconds in the meet. Carl Rouch, Rich Karst, Price Pounds and Jerry Auer teamed for the red ribbon in the distance medley. Auer returned later to team with Steve Hapner. Troy Boyer and Mike Ballinger for a second in the special distance medley. Relays placing third for Wawasee were the 3,200 relay team of Auer, Troy Minton. Hapner and Ballinger, and the 800 relay of Tim Mangas, Lance Ough, Popenfoose and Scott Johnson. Brad LeCount finished second in the pole vault with a jump of 12-6. The pole vault winner, East Noble's Phil Yuska, turned in an outstanding vault of 15-9. Le Count also finished fifth in the 100 meters. In other indivrdual events, Scott Johnson placed third in the 100 meters, Steve Sturgill was fifth in the shot put, Steve Galegor was’sixth in the high hurdles and Mike Goodspeed was second in the. high hurdles. Goodspeed’s time of 15.1 seconds was the second best he has run this season. Warrior Relays The Whitko Wildcats, bolstered by a strong showing in the high jump, scored 96>3 points to capture the fourth annual running of the Warrior Relays on Saturday. This was the first title for Whitko and the first time in three years that Wawasee has not won the meet Jerry Auers 4:34 in the 1.600-meter run was the Warriors lone first place on the afternoon. Overall, Wawasee finished fourth with 71 points Manchester was

second with 89 points, Plymouth third with 72%, North Wood fifth with 53, and Tippe Valley was sixth with 23 points. Whitko basketball sensation Jeff Peters turned in one of the meet’s best individual performances with a 38.5 in the 300-meter hurdles. That time easily erased the old meet record ‘of 39.8 which Peters set in 1983. The Notre Dame-bound senior also won the high jump with a leap of 6-5. Auer's season best in the 1,600 was the top Wawasee performance of the meet. Auer has been consistently lowering his time down the final stretch of the regular season, and coach Jerry Minton is optimistic about what lies ahead. “That was the third meet he has been around 4:34," Minton noted. “He is right where he should be. I think he is ready for the upcoming meets and one of these days I wouldn’t be surprised to see him pop one below 4:30.” One Warrior who did not have an easy time of things on Saturday was pole vaulter Brad LeCount. LeCount finished second to Manchester’s Monte Weller, a good pole vaulter in his own right, but it was some what of a disappointment. “Brad is still trying to> figure out which pole to use." Minton noted. “He was right on schedule with a leap of 13-4 earlier in the year. But then he broke two poles and that has kept him down.” The Warriors’ 3,200-meter relay team of Jerry Auer. Troy Minton. Steve Hapner and Mike Ballinger also had a fine performance on Saturday. Although the foursome could not down Manchester. they finished second with a time of 8:30.1 — just two seconds off the school record. Steve Sturgill. Dick Doll. Brian Popenfoose and Steve Galegor were the only other Warriors to nab individual honors. Sturgill was second to Whitko’s Jeff Reid in the shot put. Doll was third in the pole vault, and Popenfoose and Galegor finished fount and ‘Sixth respectively in the 300-meter hurdles. NLC Meet Wawasee sprinter/long jumper Scott Johnson turned in an

outstanding time at this year’s conference meet as he ripped off a school-record time of 22.9 in the 200-meter dash. Johnson finished second in the race, just losing out to Warsaw’s Jon Maurer at the tape. “Scott’s time was .4 better than the old record,” noted Minton. “He got off to a good start and led for most of the race. It had to be one of the biggest surprises of the meet.” The meet result, however, was anything but a surprise. The heavily-favored Warsaw Tigers had little trouble in running up 164 points to win the crown. Goshen led the rest of the field with 124 points, followed by Concord’s 68, Wawasee’s 31, Plymouth's 25, Rochester’s 24, North Wood s 23 and Bremen’s 6. Mike Ballinger was also a top individual performer for the Warriors. The junior distance runner led for the first half of the 3.200-meter run before falling to third place in a time of 10:03.2.
’’Mike was really ready to run against Wynn (Goshen standout Mike Wynn, who won the race in 9:55),” noted Minton. “He led most of the first laps, but Wynn passed him on about the sixth lap and I think he lost his concentration.” Other Warriors who placed in the top six of their events were Mike Goodspeed, sixth in the high hurdles; Auer, fourth in the 1,600; Popenfoose, sixth in the low hurdles; LeCount, second in the pole vault; and Doll, fifth in the pole vault. ( Sectional Starting Thursday, the Warriors get down to the business of qualifying for the state meet. The first step in this process is Thursday’s sectional at Warsaw. “Ballinger, Auer, Johnson and LeCount are starting to come around for us,” Minton said. “I think that the distance runners have done an especially good job for us. They are as good a group of distance runners as we’ve had here in the past couple of years.” Warsaw, Logansport and Manchester are considered to be the sectional favorites. Tired Warriors win third
By MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Writer Two weeks of anything is enough to get anyone tired of an activity. That’s exactly how the Wawasee Warriors girls tennis team feels as it enters its last week of the season. Feeling tired from frustrating season, Wawasee raised its record to 3-8 with a convincing 4-1 victory over Whitko. The victory came on the heels of the disappointing Northern Lakes Conference match May 11 and 12. Wawasee in the conference match failed to score a point as it finished in last place, tied with Rochester. Against the Wildcats, Wawasee captured wins in the singles competition, only to see the shutout
