Kosciusko Community Hospital introduces new x-ray technology

Positive results from negative images are being realized through new technology recently employed at Kosciusko Community Hospital. “We have realized a 50 percent reduction in radiation exposure to patients and staff members in the taking of diagnostic X-rays,” said Larry Stackhouse, chief Xray technologist at KCH. “That means we literally only have to expose patients to half as much radiation as before to obtain better results.” Stackhouse says the reduction in radiation exposure is the result of switching to new Kodak Lanex rare earth intensifying screens and the new Kodak T-Mat films when shooting traditional X-rays. “We expected to make some gains with the swjjjju>* Stackhouse said, “buCwe have gained much more than originally anticipated.” In addition to the reduction in exposure. Stackhouse explained, there are a number of money saving advantages with the new system; savings that will eventually show up in savings to the patients at KCH. “The speed of the exposure, basically twice as fast as we were able to use before, helps reduce the number of X-ray exams that must be redone if the patient moves.” Stackhouse explained. “This is particularly true with infants or the severely injured or ill patients who have difficulty holding their breath during exposure. We have been able to reduce the chance of movement blurring the image and thus have a higher percentage of usable Xrays available to us.” “Everyone involved in the use of diagnostic X-rays is concerned with minimizing unnecessary exposures to achieve a diagnosis, and we are not only reducing exposure to patients, we have alsp noticed that our technologists and others working with the X-ray equipment are also exposed to less stray radiation. One study indicates a 62 percent reduction to the staff.” “The new screens and film, enabling us to make shorter ex-

posures, are also lengthening the life of our X-ray tubes,” Stackhouse continued. “Heat destroys the tubes lifter continued use because 99 percent of the energy developed is heat and only about one percent is usable radiation. Decreasing the exposure time reduces the amount of heat buildup.” He explained that current Xray tube life at KCH is about four years, but the reduction in exposure time will lengthen that to seven or eight years. With nine tubes in the radiology department, six stationary and three portable, at a replacement cost of about $7,000 per tube, that’s a major savings. "In addition, the new film not only gives a clearer and sharper image, it costs about eight percent less than what we were using previously. We spend about SIOO,OOO annually on X-ray films,” Stackhouse said, “so we’ll realize an immediate sav-

ings of about SB,OOO annually on film alone.” The screens are placed on either side of the X-ray film to intensify the image by capturing and concentrating the radiation. Certain “rare earth” compounds that fluoresce, absorb X-rays and immediately emit light, or longer wavelength energy, are ground into powder, mixed with a binder and coated in a smooth layer on the screens. The intensity of the light coming from the screen depends on the intensity of the radiation and the inversion efficiency of the compounds used. More efficient screens result in

Doily hygiene necessary for good dental health

By DR. DOMENICK ZERO Virginia Commonwealth University School Os Dentistry Question: Cavities seem to run in my family. Could it be that “bad” teeth are inherited? Answer: Dentists often see parents and children with similar patterns of tooth decay, but it is still uncertain as to whether these similarities are environmental or genetic. Research certainly does indicate, however, that our environment — meaning our eating and oral hygiene habits — significantly influences our dental health. In fact, poor oral hygiene, combined with poofdiet, is usually responsible for causing tooth decay. So before attributing your “bad” teeth to heredity, take a look at how you may be unintentionally contributing to the decay process. Examine your eating habits, for example. Are you constantly munching on sugary foods? When you do that, the harmful plaque bacteria in your mouth react with the sugar in your food and produce acids. What about your oral hygiene habits? Do you often skip brushing? You should be brushing your teeth every day with an American Dental Association (ADA) accepted 'fluoride toothpaste. In addition, the ADA’s Council on Dental Therapeutics recommends that children over age six add another step to their oral hygiene regime : daily rinsing with an ADA ac- ’ cepted, over-the-counter fluoride /dental rinse. Studies have shown that these rinses can reduce cavities by 40 percent more than

less exposure to create the same, or a better image. The compounds are similar in action to the phosphers used on the inside of the television picture tube to brighten and intensify the image, and the glowing phosphers are what are seen when the television set is turned off in a dark room and the screen remains glowing slightly. “At KCH,” Stackhouse said, “we are constantly on the lookout for ways to become more efficient and cost effective. This new system is a perfect example of how the two goals can be combined in one operation.’’

just brushing with a fluoride toothpaste and-drinking fluoridated water. The first factor is the way each tooth is shaped. Teeth with deep pits and grooves allow for more harmful bacteria to grow undisturbed. Second, teeth with thin enamel (the protective covering of the.tooth) or no enamel at all are more susceptible to decay. Third, poorly aligned, crooked teeth which are more likely to trap the plaque bacteria do allow decay to more easily run its course. While these genetic factors may make your teeth susceptible to decay, it is more likely that your learned habits, such as diet and daily oral hygiene, play a greater role in your oral health. Remember, you can reverse your oral health condition and keep your teeth healthy if you eat right and take a few moments every day to practice good oral hygiene. It’s worth the investment!
