Breakfast in bed... a Mother's Day tradition
By Dee Jaynes Staff Writer According to television commercials, for some women this Mother’s Day will begin with breakfast served to her in bed on a flower decorated tray. A relaxing day of reading and being waited upon awaits her, climaxed by dinner at a fine restaurant, surrounded by her well-behaved children and adoring husband.

Who are these women? Where do they live? Has anyone ever met one of them? Perhaps they only exist in florist and greeting card commercials, figments of an advertising executive’s mind. Breakfast in bed is certainly a traditional Mother’s Day experience, but, as all mothers know, the day starts long before the tray actually enters the bedroom. A typical ‘.‘Mother’s Day Breakfast in Bed’’ begins
..w e * *■
/A p f around 6 am., the time most young children awaken on nonschool days, with pre-breakfast planning. Usually the oldest child is in charge of the advance preparations, causing the decibal level of the discussion to increase in direct proportion to the number of siblings he or she is directing. Scattered throughout the planning are gentle requests to younger brother or sister to “Be quiet stupid! Mom’s sleeping!’’ Os course she is. Occasionally, the top-secret plans have to be sidetracked while one or more children tiptoe, as noiselessly as charging rhinos to the bedroom, pry open mom’s eyes and inquire in a whisper that could be heard across town, “Are you asleep mom? We can’t find any more of Grandma’s good china!’’ That minor problem solved, mom drifts back to her restful sleep and the children return to the kitchen to prepare the actual meal. Since everyone but mom knows that mom’s favorite breakfast entree is pancakes topped with peanut butter, jelly and syrup — out comes the griddle. If your children are too young to reach the stove, expect to find a peanut butter, jelly and syrup sandwich on your tray. Blissfully, mom sleeps through the smoke alarm, the firemen leaving, the sound of breaking crockery, the numerous admonitions to the dog to “Keep your nose out of mom’s breakfast!” and the sound of her husband snoring to pretend he’s actually asleep.-Take heart, mom. Father’s Day is June 17. At last the big moment arrives and after a last minute scuffle in the hallway to determine who carries the tray (it’s always the oldest), the children enter mom’s bedroom with all the pomp and circumstance of a royal coronation. They gather around the bed, their eyes gleaming with anticipation, to await mom’s approval of their culinary masterpiece. As any mother can tell you, the silver trays in the commercials are lovely, but they just can’t compare with the aluminum foilcovered t.v. tray. Long stemmed roses are nice, but they pale next to a jelly jar lovingly filled with dandelions. Mom’s eyes fill as she gazes with affection into the little faces staring expectantly up at her . . . waiting. The moment of truth is at hand. Dallas Bjella receives burns to 50% of body Dallas Bjella, 43, r 1 Milford, is listed in fair condition at Goshen Hospital after suffering second degree burns over approximately 50 percent of his body. He is in isolation and is undergoing therapy Bjella. a welder for Dana Corporation. Syracuse plant, was working at the plant Monday morning when for an unknown reason his apron caught fire. The Syracuse Emergency Medical Service was contacted at 12:12 a m. and transported him to the hospital. It is reported Bjella suffered burns on his lower abdomen, both legs and arms, his back and buttocks.
4 This is when mothers across the country and around the world earn their merit badges for service above and beyond the call of motherhood. Never mind Dad’s war medals and commendations, we’re talking real front line heroism now. With a smile on her face and a lump in her throat, mom will now single-handedly attempt to eat this breakfast! The Motion Picture Academy is making a real mistake by limiting their Oscar nominations to those on-screen performances. This is acting! With every bite, she is asked “How is it, mom? We couldn't find any coffee, so we put soy sauce in the tea ... it’s almost the same cojor-as coffee, isn’t,it?" Smile and nod \ When the last'of the meakis finished and mom has announced that no, she really carft eat another bite, and yes, everything was really good, the time has . come for the relaxing, right? Well, like I said, this is real life, not a commercial. Faster than you can say dishes, the children have disappeared and mom, riding a wave of tenderness bordering on senility, decides to enter the disaster zone formerly known as “THE KITCHEN.” I could attempt to describe the chaos to be found there, but if you’ve experienced it, you don’t want to be reminded, and if you haven’t experienced it, you wouldn’t believe me. Speaking as a seasoned Mother’s Day Breakfast veteran, my only advice to rookies who want to hold on to that warm, tender feeling, is to forget going into the kitchen until Monday. Go back to bed, read a book, relax, and enjoy. You’re going to need all the rest you can get! Bids being accepted at Webster North Webster Town Board members will be accepting and awarding two different sets of bids at tonight’s meeting (Wednesday) at 7 p.m. in the town hall. Board members will be opening street paving bids and awarding bids for concreting the final treatment pond. In other business discussion will be on the purchase of a copy machine and typewriter and reports from the various department heads. Public participation will be held on revenue sharing expenses and a public hearing on additional appropriations and the adoption of an additional appropriations ordinance. A winner If you really want the last word in an argument, try saying, “I guess you’re right.” — Funny World

Sorosis Club program on Ukrainian eggs
The Sorosis Club of Milford ended the club year with a program and dinner at a restaurant near Winona Lake on May 7. Thirteen members and two guests, Evelyn Vandegrift and Marcia Yoder, were present. Mrs. Yoder, who is from Goshen, presented the program on Ukrainian eggs. She developed the hobby of decorating eggs in this Style several years ago and is now so proficient her Ukrainian eggs are for sale in her home. The Ukrai-’ nian people began the art form long before the time of Christ and the symbolism in the various (♦designs used reflect the superstitutions of the people, the pagan beliefs and, later, the influence of the Christian faith as the centuries passed. Mrs. Yoder described the process of melting beeswax and applying it to the egg shell in a uniform pattern, then dipping the egg in color, followed by more applications of wax and more color according to the design desired. John Kleeman to speak to nurses John Kleeman, a representative of the Mizpah Temple Shnners, will be the guest speaker at the Kosciusko county Nurses Society meeting on Tuesday, May 15, at 7:30 p.m. The monthly meting will be in the lower level of the First National Bank building located at the corner of Center and Buffalo Streets, Warsaw. Syracuse man injured as car flips over Earl A. Thompson, 27, r 5 Syracuse, sustained minor injuries in a one-vehicle accident on US 6 east of CR 37 in Benton Township. The nfishap occurred at 4 a.m. Wednesday morning. Thompson was not hospitalized. Brently D. Better, 28, Columbia City, driver of the 1978 Triumph Spitfire, in which Thompson was riding, escaped injury Elkhart County Sheriff’s Sgt. Lamar Haney reported Better was westbound on US 6, fell asleep and the auto skidded 264 feet out of control before hitting an embankment and flipping on its top. Damage was estimated at more than $2,500.
When the egg is finished, the wax is melted off and a beautifully decorated egg shell is the ' result. The eggs are then varnished for preservation purposes and 1 , they last for years. The Ukrainian people use uncooked eggs, being careful not to crack them. The yolk dries up in time and the egg is thusly preserved. , The committee for the evening consisted of Carolyn Zehr, chair- ( woman; Edith Little. Caroline Wilson, Grace Shearer, Vi Phend and Gladys Brown. New store to open in Syracuse There will be a new store opening on East Main Street in Syracuse Thursday, May 17.
