Suit alleges odometer tampering Thirteen companies and 20 people, including Lakeland Motors and Harry and Bill Appenzeller, all of Syracuse, were named in a suit filed by Indiana’s Attorney General, Linley E. Pearson, alleging automobile odometer tampering. Pearson said the suits were filed last week in Allen and Wayne Counties. In all, the suits seek a minimum $400,000 in damages. Ip,, addition, the attorney general said that although the state has evidence of tampering among the companies and individual’s named, he said many of the dealers were unaware of that they defrauded. The tampering cases extend across Indiana boundries into Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota and other states. Pearson noted high mileage cars were purchased from out-of-state leasing companies and then brought to Indiana. Odometers were then rolled back and resold through auctions to other dealers. Presently, Pearson is seeking an injunction against companies and individuals named in the suits, as well as declare the contracts between dealers and consumers void. Defendents then would be required to pay a minimum $1,500 refund, or three times the damages, whichever is higher to the individual or dealer who was the victim of the unlawful act.
