Golfers win 3 of 4

By MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Writer Wawasee’s Warrior golf squad opened the season rated sixth in the state, but that ranking didn’t help them in Elkhart as they dropped the season opener. Still, indicitive of the rating, the Warriors have rebounded from the season-opening loss at Elkhart Central to defeat Fairfield, Plymouth and Bremen on consecutive days. Wawasee raised its record to 3-1 on the season and ranking in the state to fifth as it defeated Plymouth and Bremen in a Northern Lakes Conference match Tuesday afternoon. Complete information of the match was not available at press time. Rebounding from the season opening loss, Wawasee started its comeback effort with a convincing 152-185 decision over Fairfield Monday, April 23. In the nine hole contest, Wawasee’s five shot extremely well to earn its first win of the season. The contest was played in chilly and rainy conditions at South Shore golf course. Both squads decided to play just nine holes because of the flooded back nine. The Warriors were in command from the start and easliy defeated the Falcons. Dave Schacht was medalist in the contest as he led the Warriors with a 36. His one-over-par performance was closely followed by Bryan Beaty’s 38 and Brian

Henson breaks Plymouth jinx in 2-1 win

Wawasee, behind the strong arm of senior Brian Henson, downed Plymouth for the first time in seven years on Tuesday at Plymouth. Henson struck out 12 batters and walked none as the Warriors posted a 2-1 win. The win raised Wawasee’s Northern Lakes Conference record to 1-2 heading into tonight’s (Wednesday) game at Warsaw. In what has become normal for Henson this year, he turned in a fine performance only to see the Warriors’ offense have trouble putting runs on the board. All three runs came in the final frame. “Brian has pitched very well all season,” noted coach Myron Dickerson. “But he’s had so rough luck and we have not been getting the clutch hits to back him up.” , The Warriors hit the ball sharply at Plymouth, but it wasn’t unitl Kevin Tracey opened the seventh with a double that Wawasee had a hit on the scoreboard. “We hit some solid balls that their infielders misplayed,” Dickerson noted. “But we couldn’t get any clean hits.” Tracey advanced to third on Tim Fraser’s bunt. Fraser was also safe on the play when the Plymouth pitcher misplayed his

Keims’ 38. The final score for Wawasee was Kim Zurcher’s 40 as John Nemeth’s 41 was discarded. “I was pleased with our performance against Fairfield,” said Cesco. “Schacht hasn’t been playing all that well lately, but he had a fine day with Fairfield. Still it wasn’t all Schacht that pleased Cesco. “The whole team played well, and I believe anytime you shoot under 160 for nine holes, or 320 for 18, you are playing very good golf." Wawasee also received good news prior to Monday’s tee off with Fairfield. Senior standout Jeff Atwood will be reinstated effective May 1. Atwood is currently suspended for a violation of the Wawasee Athletic Code. At Elkhart, Central’s Mike Lolglazer’s five over-par 76 lifted the Blue Blazers past the Warriors. Teammate Todd Ziliri finished second in the match with an 82. The closest Warrior to Lolglazer was Beaty who shot an 83, including a three-over par 39 on the back nine. David Schacht fell four strokes behind Beaty with an 87 while Kim Zurcher and Keith Burbank both shot a 90 for the day. Steve Dunithan finished the contest with a 93 for Wawasee. “The loss was just a matter of circumstances,” said Cesco. “It was our first match of the year, but we will be okay this year.”

slow roller. Both runners scored the deciding runs on Jeff Carden’s deep shot to rightcenter field. “He hit it a long way and their rightfielder had to make a long run for the ball,” said Dickerson. “It just fell off the tip of his glove.” The Pligrims answered with one run of their own in the bottom half of the inning to close the gap to 2-1. But Henson struck out Tony Plothow and got Dean Huffstetter to fly out to wrap up the win. The junior varsity also came away with a win at Plymouth. Scott Siler’s charges used the double steal effectively on their way to a 7-1 win. Kent Enyeart picked up the win for the 2-2 junior Warriors. Scott Robinson and Travis Reiff each had two hits. Kevin Parker had two RBIs. Other Action The Warriors had rough going in NLC games during the past week. Last Thursday, Henson lost a tight pitching duel as the Warriors dropped a 1-0 decision to Concord. The Minutemen scored the games only run on a Wawasee error in the top of the seventh inning. The following night, North Wood blanked the Warriors by

the score of 8-0. Tony Blackburn and Ben Beer shared mound duties for Wawasee. Brad Mitchell led the offense with two hits. Outside of the conference, however, the Warriors had smooth sailing, taking a doubleheader from Manchester by the scores of 12-5 and 13-6 on Saturday at Wawasee. The Warriors displayed plenty of offense in the opener, jumping out to an 11-0 lead after four innings. Blackburn, Tracey and Steve Yoder each had two hits in the contest. Yoder added three RBl’s. Rob Jewson got the win. Tim Fraser’s grand slam highlighted a nine-run sixth inning in the second contest. Fraser

Tennis team drops two

. By MARK WEINSTEIN * Sports Writer Wawasee’s girls’ tennis sqaud finally opened the season amidst chilly temperatures and two strong opponents, losing to Concord and Plymouth by identical 7-0 scores. Wawasee, coming off its first loss of the season tried to improve on its own courts Tuesday afternoon. But the change of location didn’t influence the outcome as Plymouth turned in the second straight whitewash of the Warriors with a 7-0 blanking. Sharon Bohnstedt, playing in the number one position for the Warriors played her opponent close throughout the first set, but dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Plymouth’s Angie Hunter. Wawasee’s second player, Lisa Keener dropped a 6-2,6-1 decision to Lana Powell while third seeded Lisa Hunter dropped to Betty Gee 6-3, 6-1. It wasn’t until Michelle Courtney, playing at number four singles, that Wawasee managed more than four wins in a match. Courtney dropped 6-2, 6-3 to Susan Haper. “Playing against the number one team in the conference and being only the second match this year, I was pleased with our progress," admitted Peterson. "We won more games this year against Plymouth, so it was good. Wawasee, although off to a rocky start, seems to be taking its lumps in stride. And even with the losses, Peterson is not giving up on her squad. "We are looking forward to the rest of the season,” said Peterson. "Now that we have the toughest two opponents out of the way, it’s all down hill from here.” Against Concord, the Warriors found themselves in an uphill struggle with the 18th-ranked Minutemen. Concord stunned the Warriors by taking the first two matches 6-0, 6-0 before Wawasee could win a game. The Warriors’ first victory came in the first set of Lisa Keener's match with Concord’s Lori Wesolek, the Minutemen’s number three singles player. Keener dropped a 6-1, 6-2 verdict. “The girls were really excited about playing, but I also think they were nervous too," added. Peterspn. "They didn’t seem to realize what hit them at the

beginning, but they came back at the end.” Wawasee’s closest match of the day came in the number five singles position. Therian Hinesley went three sets with Concord’s Lynn Kruzel before bowing 4-6, 7-6, 2-6. Despite losing every match, Peterson felt her team performed admirably in the contest. “Any time you win this many games against a highly ranked team, you’ve done good,” informed Peterson. “We Won more games this year against them than ever before. It was a good match for us.” Meanwhile, Wawasee’s doubles teams didn’t fair well either. Michelle Courtney, and Ann Steffan dropped the top match 6-0, 6-2 while in the second position Beth Carey artd Candy Clevenger lost 6-4, 6-4. Wawasee, 0-2, returns to the courts for another match Wednesday afternoon at Lakeland High School. The match is a makeup of the originally scheduled season opener. The Warriors will then return to action Saturday, April 28 in a tennis invitational at Elkhart Memorial. Outdoor sports are quite popular Cycling, canoeing and camping are increasing in popularity, according to a recent federal government report. The survey, conducted by the Census Bureau, states that participation in these outdoor sports more than doubled between 1960 and 1982. Twenty-eight percent of those surveyed said they cycled at least once.during the summer. That is up from nine percent in the 1960 survey. Canoeing rose from two to eight percent. Camping increased from eight to 19 percent. SPORTS QUIZ ANSWERS pKon IJ9A3 stiqj tqiiuis JJOOQ £ O)BU1B)(O B)(OXv Z MeqsuajQ uag i
