19 YEARS AGO. APRIL 24.1974 The strike that has idled employees at the Weatherhead Co. plant at Syracuse has been settled and the over 300 workers returned to their jobs at midnight Sunday. Dorothy K. Smith, 93, well known Syracuse resident who resides at 131 West Pearl street, will leave Monday, April 29, for Sarasota, Fla., where she will make her home at Retirement Unit (No. 10) 1507 S. Tuttle Ave., Sarasota. She will make the trip by air. Mrs. Smith has been a Crisis seminar planned for area “Surviving Traumas and Catastropes,” a seminar for victims, their families and professionals, will be held on Tuesday, May 15, from 8:30 a m. to 4:30 p.m. in South Bend’s Century Center. Two leading professionals in stress and disaster management will address the seminar. Charles R. Figley, a professor in Purdue University's department of child development and family studies and the director of the Traumatic Stress Research Program, will discuss how traumatic stress affects victims and their families, and how to prevent and manage post-traumatic stress. Don M Hartsough, an assoicatie professor in Purdue University’s department of psychological service, served as principal author and investigator for the Mental Health and Disaster Work Research Program, sponsored by the US Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institute of Mental Health. Hartsough will lecture on the effects of traumatic stress on rescue worker and other professionals. Registration for the program may be completed by calling the continuing education office at IUSB at 237-4167. WCTU plans luncheon Mrs. Herbert Eberhardt presided over the group’s April meeting held at the home of Mrs. John Wray. Mrs. Wray read the scripture and Mr. Wray led the group in prayer Mrs. Edna Swansen sang "I Will Pilot Thee’’ and a report on alcohol and drugs in the schools was read by Mary Ralston. Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Brower, Syracuse, have returned home after spending the winter at Oaklalawaha, Fla. 30 YEARS AGO, APRIL 23, 1954 Mrs. Bertha Johnson, mother of Mrs. Herman Bauman of Syracuse, celebrated her 90th birthday Monday, when ten friends and former neighbors from Chicago, were dinner guests. During the afternoon fourteen additional friends called The home was beautifully decorated with flowers, gifts of the Chicago group. Mrs. Johnson makes her home with her daughter, and Mr. Bauman. Brutus will work with the Chore-Time distributor network taking telephone orders for products and literature. He will also advise customers on technical questions concerning the ChoreTime product line. A graduate of Purdue University with a bachelor of science degree in agricultural mechanization. Brutus previously served as sales and service representative for Shepard Industries, Monticello. A native of Pine Village, he resides near Syracuse. NAMED COORDINATOR — Les Kreger, technical service manager, Chore-Time Equipment, Inc., Milford, has named William (“Dan”) Wayt to the position of show display coordinator for the Milford firm. In addition to his current responsibilities as technical service assistant, Wayt’s new duties will include development, transportation, setup/dismantling and maintenance of the Chore-Time displays used at trade shows and conventions. A graduate with a bachelor of arts degree from St. Louis Christian College, Wayt joined Chorelime in 1973. A native of Wellsville, Ohio, Wayt, his wife, Diana, and their family reside in New Paris.

The young couple received many useful gifts. Dr. D. W. Kurtz of the Bethany Bible Institute of Chicago addressed the 1934 graduating class of the Syracuse High School at commencement exercises held in the school, last Friday evening. Twenty-five Texas “Bob Whites” were released in Turkey Creek township, Tuesday afternoon, by the Wawasee Conservation club. A surprise party in honor of Mrs. Ray Byrket and her son, Richard was held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Bert Laughlin, Sunday. There were 24 guests present. These were: Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Held and family; Mr. and Mrs. George Rarig and family; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Dean and family; Amy Byrket, Russell Byrket, William Byrket, Jake Loutzenhiser and Ray Byrket and family.
