Wawasee FFA honors members and adults
Approximately one hundred seventy-five members, parents and guests attended the annual Wawasee Future Farmers of America Awards Banquet on Monday evening. The banquet was held in the high school commons and the meal was prepared by the Food Services staff. Retiring Officers Dave Roberts, president; Randy Beer, vice president; Scott Barker, secretary; Troy Moneyheffer, treasurer; Troy Reith, reporter; and Ken Schafer, sentinel presided over the meeting. Numerous guests were recognized by the chapter for their help during the past year. This included the school administrators, the FFA Senior’s Parents, test plot contributors. slave auction buyers, and the members of the Vocational Agriculture Advisory Committee. tendance. He performed his guitar solo that earned his recent District and State FFA honors. Randy Warren, vocational agriculture instructor, highlighted the years activities. Members that had competed in dairy judging, livestock judging, and tractor troubleshooting were recognized. The crop judging team of Ken Schafer, Scott Barker, Steve Tethrake and Marty Brown and the soil judging team of Randy Beer, Ken Schafer, Dave Roberts, and Scott Barker were presented pins for advancing to State level competition. Pins and certificates were presented to those members submitting applications in the FFA Proficiency Awards Program. The following members received first place plaques for being named District FFA Proficiency Award winners: Randy Beer, Swine Production; Troy
Moneyheffer, Ag Sales and Service; Scott Barker, Placement in Ag Production; and Deb Whitacre, a dual winner in Fruit and Vegetable Production and in Horse Production. Members competing in the District Leadership Contests were then recognized with the following members receiving first place plaques for winning their respective contests: Ken Schafer, Agricultural Essay; Randy Beer, Job Interview; Rich Miller, Talent; and Dave Roberts and Scott Barker, Ag Mechanics team Demonstration. Drawings for door prizes were held. The following business provided the door prizes: Autopro, Syracuse; Clayton’s Garden Center, North Webster; Crystal Flash, North Webster; Doll’s Decorating Service, Milford; Farmer’s Feed Service, North Webster; Golden Razor, Syracuse; Milford Large Animal
Clinic, Milford; and Sharp’s Hardware, Milford. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to the following local adults for their help this past year: Dick Casto of Milford Motors; Ron Hoyt, Cooperative Extension Service Youth Agent; Marylee Clingaman, vocational secretary; Jerry Lambert, high school teacher and FFA auctioneer; and the Smoke Signals, the Wawasee High School newspaper. The Honorary chapter Farmer Degree was presented these adults: Lois Koher, retired cook; Dr. Albert Schafer and Black Walnut Farms; Lee Troyer, ag mechanics instructor; and Richard Wysong, vocational director. The Distinguished Service Award, which is the highest honor a local chapter can bestow upon a non member was presented to Howard Beer. Randy Beer presented Dave Roberts with the Retiring President’s gavel and the meeting was adjourned. Arbor Day observed at Christian School The children at the Milford Christian School observed Arbor Day on April 13 along with the rest of the children in the state of Indiana. 6 The tree selected this year in Indiana was the Tulip Tree and the children learned all about the tree and then planted one out in the yard.

ORCHESTRA FESTIVAL — Lakeland Community School Corporation Music Department will present an Orchestra Festival on Thursday, April 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the Wawasee High School Auditorium. Groups participating will include the sixth grade strings playing “French Song,” “Allegro” and “March of the Metro Gnome.” The seventh, eighth and ninth grade strings will perform “Apollo Suite,” and from the “Fansticks” “Try To Remember.” Performing for the first time is the Wawasee High School Chamber Orchestra. The orchestra will play two pieces by J. S. Bach and “L’Estro Armonicho concerto” in D Major by Vivaldi. The symphony string orchestra will perform a preview of Nashville. They will be playing three pieces that will be performed at a contest in Nashville, Tenn., on May 5. The symphony orchestra will perform among others: “The Typewriter” with Christie Vanderveer as the typist and “Memory from the musical “Cats.” Also featured will be Joy Karesh performing the "Violin concerto Number 5” in D Major by Seitz. "The Russian Chorale,” and "Overture” by Tchaikovsky will conclude the evening of music. The public is invited to attend.
Kindergarten round-up at Christian School
Round-up for pre-kindergarten and kindergarten at the Milford Christian School for the 1984-85 School year will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 3. Children must be four and five by September Ist to enroll (Pre-K, 4-year-olds; K-, 5-year-olds). Parents are asked to take their child’s birth certificate with them.

Jon Haab is top livestock judge
Jon Haab of Wawasee captured individual honors ih last week's county livestock judging contest in Goshen. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Haab, Milford. Haab placed first in a field of 50 contestants from Kosciusko County. His first-place finish qualified him to compete in this week’s area judging contest in South Bend. Another Wawasee team, comprised of Kent Nulf, Ken Schafer, Kevin Grimm, Debra Schafer, Roberta Whitacre and Dale Grady, placed sixth. The top two county teams advanced to the area level competition. Two teams from Whitko placed first and second, scoring 1,161 and 1,132 points respectively. Wawasee’s third-place team scored 1,123 points.
