Late C.C. rally sinks Warriors
By TOM CHARLES Sports Editor After last week’s tough loss to Columbia City, Wawasee lefthander Rob Jewson may be a believer in the dangers of Friday the 13th. The young Wawasee hurler was working on a no-hitter going into the seventh frame last Friday at Syracuse, only to see City rally for two runs in the bottom of the inning to post a 2-1 victory. Despite the loss, Wawasee mentor Myron Dickerson was encouraged by Jewson’s performance. In his other mound appearance this fall, Jewson lasted only one inning, giving up two hits. This time he was nearly perfect through innings of work. “I wasn’t planning to go the entire game with Jewson,” commented Dickerson. ‘‘But he was throwing well and I wasn’t going to lift him as long as he was working on a no-hitter.” Jewson’s no-hit hopes were crushed by a home run off the bat of City’s Jeff Gaerte which opened the seventh inning. After retiring Brent Simmons on an infield grounder, Jewson surrendered a single to Joe Haun, prompting Dickerson to take him off the mound. "I was concerned if they got anyone on base in the late innings,” the Wawasee coach said. “I wanted to keep a fresh arm in there.” Dickerson elected to bring on the staff ace, senior right-hander Brian Henson. Henson promptly responded by striking out Chad Jannen. However. City’s Jon Anderson followed with a bloop single off the bat handle to score Haun with the winning run. Traviolia Sharp Freshman Brett Traviolia made his first varsity start for

NEARLY A NO-HITTER — Warrior left-hander Rob Jewson came close to registering a no-hitter in Wawasee’s 2-1 loss to Columbia City on April 21. Jewson’s hitless game was spoiled in the bottom of the seventh when City’s Jeff Gaerte smacked a game-tying home run. (Photo by Mark Weinstein)

Ryman drew a base on balls, was sacrificed to second by Jeff Carden, advanced to third on Brad Mitchell’s single before Traviolia sent him home. Kevin Tracey and Tony Blackbum provided the remaining two hits for Wawasee. In addition, the Warriors recorded three stolen bases — one each by Joe Melendez, Blackburn and Mitchell. Gaerte, Haun and Anderson had the only three hits for Colum-
