Tin Cans plan Bth reunion
“I don’t get no respect” is not only the complaint of TV comedian Rodney Dangerfield. US Navy destroyermen have been saying this for years. Known as the ‘‘Little Boys” of World War 11, destroyers lacked the recognition that the ‘‘Big Boys” on the carriers, battleships and cruisers got. But they knew that when the Navy wanted a job done quickly and thoroughly, then the call went out “send in the destroyers.” Destroyermen have been somewhat more optimistic lately because they now have a national organization to represent them. The outfit, known as Tin Can Sailors, is the Navy’s nickname for the light and thin hull destroyers of World War II fame. Some 71 destroyers were lost in the war, largerst of any other ship. The Tin Can Sailors is a nonprofit national organization comprising of destroyer sailors of every class of destroyer, dating back to World War I. Over 1,500 different ships and crews are

COLE PORTER SILVERWARE DISCOVERED — John Elliott, trust officer of First National Bank of Warsaw, and Jo Paxton, coexecutors of the estate of the late Bernard Hess of Warsaw, were surprised to find that the contents of the estate contained a small Queen Anne chest containing a 119-piece set of English silver flatware gilded with 24-karat gold. Along with the flatware, was found a sale bill, dated March 22, 1972, indicating that the late Hess bought the flatware from the assets of the estate of the late songwriter. Cole Porter. The find was a part of the home contents the pair was inventoring for an upcoming estate auction and was stored in a large cardboard box in the garage at the home. According to local artist and art historian, Theodore Good, the set is referred to as being gold vermeil and is of the King’s pattern, a pattern supposedly favored by Britain’s current royalty.
