From oil to the Indy
By M. LYNN GRAY Guest Feature Writer A soft mist rises from the wheat field across the road and a turtle dove mourns from he woods behind the house. A warm yellow glow peers above the tree tops to the east and an early morning breeze rustles the newly opened leaves on the maples in the yard. The usual dust of the dirt road is temporarily laid, due to the pre-dawn shower that pinged on the tin roof and pattered against the window pane. After the sun makes its appearance the road will dry out and the puddles which reflect the pale blue sky will soak into the surrounding
IT jW MOCK BODY — The bus body shown above was built by Charles T. Mock of North Webster. Mock, great-grandfather of M. Lynn Gray, drove a school bus in the days when the school supplied the beds and each driver supplied the chassis. Like today the school bus drivers of yesterday took their responsibility seriously.

soil. For now, it’s enough that the freshly washed world is pure in its morning beauty and the silence is broken only by the symphony of nature. In the distance, a faint chugging noise drifts to the ear and the horses, in their pen by the barn, paw the earth and raise muzzle’s to the air. The pounding comes nearer and the very air seems to vibrate. A faint glow forges ahead and lights the yet dim roadway, overshadowed by trees. A long black body follows the single glaring eye, and four-spok-ed wheels send up sprays of rain water which fall back to earth, drenching the grass and giving it a fine coat of mud. Indiana’s car industry began in 1865, when Terre Haute started

producing oil. The year 1885 brought the production of gasoline in Francisville, Pulaski County. With these new products. Hoosiers started to think of ways to use them. Kokomos’ industrial genius, Elwood Haynes, started designing his first automobile in 1891. The first Haynes Apperton was test driven in Kokomo on July 4, 1894. This marked the start of Indiana as the world’s automobile manufacturing center, a claim it held for many years, to eventually lose to the state of Michigan. In Webster Too It seems that everyone in the state had plans for the perfect car, and North Webster was no different. The early 1900 s brought the Ruth car into existence. Built by three Webster businessmen, the car gleaned its name from the wives of the three men. Our family had early interests in the automobile and in the 1920 s my Grandfather, Lester J. Gray, built speedsters. These forerunners of the sportscar were built on Model T chassis and featured disc wheels, bucket seats, high speed Ruxton rear axle, and speeds of up to 60 mph over the pock-marked roads. My grandfather, as well as my great grandfather, C. T. Mock, drove buses for the community schools. In those days, the school supplied the beds and each driver supplied the chassis. Construction of the bed was mainly of wood studding and siding. The roof was patent leather stretched over a framework of lathes, and framed glass windows lined the sides and were on hinges to allow for hot temperatures, when they could be swung open. The passengers sat in high-backed benches that were cushioned by wood shavings covered with patent leather. Each driver took his responsibility seriously, and on one occasion, following a heavy snow fall, the roads were heavily drifted and in one circumstance, a child’s home was located a quarter of a mile down a country lane that was impassable. My grandfather left the older students in charge of the parked bus and carried the youngster through the drifts to her home and then returned to the bus to continue the route. The first headlights burned on kerosene, the speed limit was 35 mph in 1935. On August 9, 1909, the first auto race was run in Indianapolis on a crushed stone and tar oval. The Indy 500 has come a long way since then, and so has the old ‘horseless carriage.’
