Grab the brass ring
By CHAR BUTLER Guest Feature Writer Everyone in the ice cream parlor looked at the middleaged, neatly dressed lady sitting at the counter. She had slurped the bottom of her chocolate soda, making that gosh-it-is-all-gone sound with the straw, then turned around on the stool, returned our amused gazes with a broad toothy grin and announced, “My mother wouldn’t let me do that when I was little, so I’m doing it now!” She paid her bill and disappeared into the night. Driving home, I thought about some things I wanted to do -«• yet. 1. Ride in a hot air balloon. Not too high or too far and on a beautiful summer day. 2. Rubber-raft the Colorado River; not the roughest water, but just a little. 3. Sail around the world on

Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth 11. Any class. 4. Go on a picture-taking safari in Africa’s Serengeti, in a touring car; and ride on an elephant. A short ride. I’ll do all this before my bod is cremated and scattered to the winds. I gotta. Seems as if I’ve given up a lot of things through the years. First, it was climbing trees and the outside of the courthouse. Then Miss Twomley made me promise to quit playing football with the boys. Later, I hadda give up staying out late . . then smoking. And drinking. Now ... I can’t eat a big meal after6p.m. I don’t mind growing older It’s all this other stuff that goes with it...

The Morgan, explained Mrs. Schafer to the group, is very versitile in competitions. She told how her entire family enjoy this sport, but look on it as hard work as well. The hostess then served a molded fruit dessert and coffee The next meeting will be on April 9 at 7:30 p.m. with the Columbian Reading Club hosting the reciprocity program
