CABLE CAR ON MT. TAI — This large cable car brought us to the top of Mt. Tai. The mountainous terrain with the winding roads are visible in the background. Mt. Tai is about 8,000 feet above sea level, not a large mountain, but sacred to the Chinese people from ancient times. Mt. Tristan in Shandong Province Mount Taishan, known as Taishan or Daizong in very ancient times, was renamed Taishan in the spring and Autumn Period (770-476 8.C.). Situated in the eastern part of the country ' it was called the East sacred Mountain, the First of the Five Sacred Mountains. Its principal peak rises majestically 1,545 metres above sea level. There are many famous scenic sports and places of (Historical interest on Mount Taishan. In historical times Mount Taishan was held in reverence by emperors of the various dynasties. Many of them, after ascending the throne, made pilgrimages to Taishan to confer titles on the mountain to show that they were acting on the will of Heaven so that they might reign in peace. Attracted by its frame, many scholars and men of letters in the past also left their foot prints on Mount Taishan. Among them Confucius of the Zhou Dynasty, Sima Xiangru and Sima Qian of the Han Dynasty, Lu Ji of the Jin Dynasty, Li Bai and Du Fu of the Tang dynasty and many others of the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. They wrote many poems and inscriptions in praise of Mount Taishan. Mount Taishan’s imposing majesty, its sheer cliffs and deep, secluded valleys, sturdy cypresses and pines, and its constantly changing scenery in all seasons make it a great tourist attraction all the year round.
