Young faces carry *B4 diamond hopes
By TOM CHARLES Sports Editor With a team that features 15 freshmen and only four seniors, one might expect to find coach Myron Dickerson with a gloomy outlook on the 1984 baseball season. But despite the growing pains associated with inexperience, Dickerson sees a positive side to his youthful squad. ‘‘l feel very good about this team,” Dickerson noted. “t think it’s something that is generated by youth. Many times you have young people involved in a program and they are hungry and eager to play. I think that is what we have.” Enthusiasm will be important to the Warriors, who open a tough 30-game schedule with a home contest against West Noble on Tuesday. Following the opener, the Warriors travel to traditional powers Elkhart Central and East Noble. “Every team in our conference is a solid baseball team and we have some outstanding conference teams.” Dickerson said. “We’ll go outside of the conference and play a rigorous schedule as well.” Solid pitching will be an important key to a smooth ride over the rough schedule. But despite having one of the strongest arms in the area in senior Brian Henson, the Warriors could be questionable on the mound Henson, who was the team s leading hurler last spring, has a snappy curve and can throw some smoke According to Dickerson, his fastball reaches 87 miles per hour — an impressive figure for a high school player. “Brian is a quality pitcher." said Dickerson "He has been very, very strong for us over the past couple of years He could challenge the school's career strikeout record " However, one pitcher does not make make a staff by himself and Dickerson is in search of

some other arms to relieve Henson. The leading prospects at this point are senior Tony Blackbum and juniors Steve Yoder, Kevin Tracey and Rob Jewson. Os the four, only Blackbum and Tracey have limited varsity experience. Yoder was not on the team last year and is struggling to regain his form. Jewson does not have varsity experience but has shown promising potential in practice. “Rob could move up into the second or third spot depending on his progress,” said Dickerson in reference to the southpaw. “He doesn’t throw real hard, but he will have to base his stifff on control.” “I think we will be a very good team when Henson is on the mound,’’ noted Dickerson. "When he is pitching we’ll have our experienced fielders playing their positions.” Around The Horn Quickness looks to be the main asset of the Warriors’ infield. Although the starting lineup has not been determined, all of the infield prospects have shown good speed. Blackburn and sophomore Dave Kistler are the leading prospects at third base and shortstop. Kistler saw limited varsity action in 1983 before breaking his hand against Elkhart Memorial. Blackburn, a potent threat on the base paths, saw regular action last season. At the other corner, Tracey, Henson and Jewson are in a battle for the first base spot. They will likely share duties as they alternate spots on the mound. Tracey may also be in line for some outfield duties. Yoder appears to have found a home at second base. He will be relieved by junior Robert Roa. “We are untested under fire to be perfectly honest,” Dickerson admitted “Yet we have good quickness in the lineup. We have extremely good quickness in Yoder. Blackbum and Kistler. All three are very gutsy

BACK ON THE DIAMOND — These lettermen will form the core of Myron Dickerson’s 1984 Wawasee baseball team, which is hoping to improve upon last year’s 18-12 record. ballplayers.” The Warriors lost a standout catcher, Eric Beer, to graduation last year, and two new prospects are in a battle to fill that role. Junior Tracy Ryman and senior Tim Fraser are vying for the spot. Ryman, who hits from the left side, has shown good potential at the plate. Fraser has a quick release and strong throwing arm. The outfield is anchored by senior centerfielder Jeff Carden. Carden came on lastXear to provide defensive leadership and will be counted on to do the same this spring. Tracey may see some action in right field if he does not nail down the first base spot. The third spot is up for grabs. Stealing The Show When Wawasee turns to offense the name of the game becomes “speed.” If the Warriors are able to get runners to first base, Dickerson is going to look for the

quickest way to get them around the diamond. “We stole quite a few bases last year and we like to run,” he commented. “We want to be agressive on the bases and find out if a catcher has a good arm or a sore arm. If he doesn’y have a good arm you can be sure he’ll have a sore one by the time we are done with him.” But that quickness does no good unless the Warriors can put people on the bases. The majority of Wawasee's hitters are untested and Dickerson is taking a wait-and-see attitude towards this aspect of the offense. “We have some inexperienced people, but Blackburn and Kistler did well for us last year,” said Dickerson. “I think Yoder and Ryman will do a good job for us. But the rest will just have to wait and see.” “We have some young freshmen that look as though they might be hitters,” he added.

“If we go down the lineup and people aren’t hitting, we ll bring these kids up.” Conference When it comes to baseball, the NLC belongs to Plymouth. The Pilgrims have captured ten consecutive conference crowns and appear to have the muscle to challenge for another. Concord, Goshen and North Wood will also be strong in 1984. The Minutemen may be as good as they have ever been according to coach Chuck Fowler. “Concord should be very strong and should be among the top two or three teams in the conference,” said Dickerson. “It is going to be difficult to tell how we’ll do until we find out what our second and third pitchers will do.” “However, with Henson on the mound and if we can get people on base we should be able to beat any team in the conference,” he concluded.
