STUDIOUS AND ATHLETIC — Balancing a good athletic career and a good academic average is not always easy, but Kim Zurcher, left, and Jon Vitaniemi have managed to combine the two. Both of the Wawasee senior standouts were named to the Academic All-State basketball team last week. Vitaniemi was named to the first team and Zurcher received honorable mention recognition. Two Warriors honored
Two Wawasee basketball standouts, Jon Vitaniemi and Kim Zurcher, were named to the allstate academic basketball team last week. Vitaniemi was selected to the first team and Zurcher received honorable mention recognition. The 15-member first team was chosen by a coaches’ panel. Players chosen for the squad rank in the upper one-fourth of their class and have an SAT score above 900 in addition to their athletic credentials. Wawasee coach John Wysong credited Vitaniemi and Zurcher with outstanding academic and athletic achievement in earning this honor. “I think there were three key' factors in their selection,” said Wysong. “First of all, they have to hold excellent academic records. Vito in particular ranks head and shoulders above the academic qualification standards.” “Secohdly, they must have oustanding statistics,” added Wysong. “Both of them have good personal statistics. The last

two seasons were outstanding for Vito, and Zurcher had an excellent season this year.” Vitaniemi finished his career with 796 points, fifth on the alltime list at Wawasee. This year he was the Warriors’ leading scorer, averaging 19.5 points over 21 games. He had a high of 30 points against Triton. Last year, he scored 343 points for an average of 14.9. Zurcher saw limited action off the bench in the 1982-83 campaign, averaging .only 7.6 per contest. However, he stepped .into a more complete role this year and responded with a 16.5 average in 19 games. He had a high of 25 against Goshen and Fairfield. “Team records also had a lot to do with? being named to the team,” said Wysong. “They were part of a program that was 32-12 over the past two years. I think they can be very proud of that.” The Warriors have compiled a 45-22 mark in Wysong’s three seasons at the helm. The best record in that three-year span was a 17-6 mark in 1982-83.
