Memorial wins sectional —
Six gymnasts qualify for regional, Warriors second
By TOM CHARLES Sports Editor The Wawasee gymnastics team saw its streak of four consecutive sectional titles come to an end on Saturday at the hands of a talented Elkhart Memorial squad. The Chargers won all of the optional events to compile a team score of 95.55 points. The Warriors finished second with 86.1 points. Elkhart Central, Warsaw, North Wood and Plymouth rounded out the field. Memorial’s effort was really a one-girl show as Stephanie Reich captured first place in all of the optional events. Her highest marks came in the floor exercise and bars where she received a 9 45 and 9.25 respectively. “We pretty well knew that Steph would be hard to beat in all of the events,” said Wawasee Assistant Coach Natt Clark. “We knew that it would take good depth for us to win the meet.” However, depth was the one element that Wawasee seemed to lack. Kathy Campbell was the only optional team member to place in any event. She finished second on the balance beam, second on the uneven bars and third in the vault. She also finished second in

the all-around competition. “This was one of the best performances Kathy has had for us all year,” said Clark. One of the disappointing aspects of the optional competition was Wawasee’s performance on the balance beam. “It just wasn’t our day on the beam,” noted Clark. “None of our girls stayed on. In fact, only one girl stayed on all day, and she was from Memorial so that didn't help.” The Warriors were also hampered by injuries. Jeanine Gunn has been fighting an injury for nearly three weeks. Heidi Beer injured her ankle before the last meet of the season. Neither girl competed in the sectional. Raeni Rinker came close to advancing to the regional, but came up .15 points short in the uneven bars. Rinker’s score of 7.85 put her in fourth place, just behind Central’s Alicia Walter. Irma Cruz placed fifth in the floor exercise. She scored an 8.3 and an 8.1 on her two routines, giving her an overall mark of 8.2. “Overall, I think the girls did a really good job,” Clark said. “I think they deserve a good round of applause.”

Intermediate The brightest spot of the sectional was Wawasee’s strong showing in the intermediate events. Although no team score is tallied on the intermediate level, the Warriors were head and shoulders above the rest of the field. Led by Paula Smith, who won the all-around title, the Warriors qualified five intermediate gymnasts for this Saturday’s regional. Wawasee won only two intermediate events, but had an impressive display of depth, particularly in the balance beam. “We were hoping to take two of the top four spots in the beam,” said Clark. Instead, Paula Smith, Michele Leffler and Shelly Daniels combined to sweep the event. Along with her first place on the beam, Smith took first in the floor exercise and fourth on the uneven bars. Those results paved the way for her to capture the allaround title with a score of 31.30. “Paula has been performing

well the past few meets, but this has to be the best overall performance that she has given,” said Clark. “This is the first time since (Head Coach) Kim Conrad has been here that we’ve had an intermediate all-around champion.” Clark was also pleased with the fact that Wawasee had five performers qualify for the regional. “This ties the highest number of intermediate gymnasts we have sent to the regional in one year,” he commented. Aside from Daniels and Leffler, who qualified on the balance beam, and Smith, who qualified on the beam and in the floor exercise, Tressa Littleton and Stephanie Crow won regional berths. Littleton turned in two solid performances to finish in a threeway tie for third in the floor exercise. Her score of 7.95 was identical to that of Concord’s Mindy Weaver and Northwood’s Brenda Clouse. All three will advance.

Crow barely edged out Memorial’s Andrea Howard for third place in the vault. Crow recorded an 8.05, just a notch above Howard’s 8.0. Marcia Taylor was the only other Wawasee gymnast to finish in the top six in any event. She scored a 7.1 on the uneven bars to tie for sixth with Memorial’s Madonna Goudarzi. “The girls did an excellent job,” said Clark. “We were pleased with the overall result. Everyone did what they could.” Regional Campbell, Smith, Crow, Daniels, Leffler and Littleton | now advance to this Saturday’s Merrillville Regional. The action is scheduled to begin around noon. Warsaw’s Katrina Curtis also qualified for the regional in the vault and floor exercise events. Curtis is Warsaw’s only gymnast, and has been working out with the Wawasee team this week.

ABC defines amateur status The American Bowling Congress has set forth certain guidelines for amateur bowlers in light of the fact that bowling is on the road to becoming an Olympic sport. The U.S. Olympic Committee requires that a meaningful distinction be made between amateur and professional status within a sport. The ABC guidelines, which are an attempt to provide this distinction, are expected to be debated at the annual convention in Reno, Nev., on March 23. According to the proposed guidelines, any ABC member is considered to be an amateur with the exception of those who: 1. Identifies himself as a professional or becomes a member of a pro bowling group. 2. Is subsidized by a bowling sponsor, manufacturer or bowling agency so as to devote his primary attention to the practice of bowling. 3. Devotes half or more of his working time as a paid instructor. 4. Earns a major portion of his income as an exhibition bowler. 5. Receives more remuneration from sanctioned bowling competition than his overall expenses relative to such competition in any calendar year. It is hoped that these guidelines will help get bowling into the Olympics.
