Children's toys are antique collector's joy
By CATHY BRILL Staff Writer Bonnie Lou Scott of rural Leesburg is not just toying with her hobby. She is quite serious about collecting her antique toys and is especially proud of her collection of stuffed bears which date back to the early 1900 s. She is so proud, infact, that she wears an antique gold bear pendant around her neck. Bonnie Lou delights in telling the story of how Theodore Roosevelt inspired the making of stuffed bears. It all started, she explains, when Roosevelt refused to hunt a lame bear while on an exposition in the Mississippi Valley. The Mitchems, she says,

WHO WANTS AN OLD TEDDY BEAR? — Bonnie Lou Scott it seems is the answer to the question posed by the children’s story book pictured here. Miss Scott, sitting next to her caravan of bears is proud of her collection of bears which date back to the early 1900 s. Chugging along side Bonnie Lou Scott’s bears is a 1895 Bliss train. The paper lithographed train was originally made for the 1893 Chicago-Columbian exposition and later a few were produced as a children's toy.

who owned a stationery store in a nearby town, heard the story and crafted a crude bear likeness. They placed it in a store window display and began rapidly selling them. From that point the craze grew, she explains. Many of Bonnie Lou’s bears date back to the early 1900 s. Price range, she says, varies a great deal. Although Bonnie Lou has bid up to S6OO for bears at auction, she has also been able to buy antique bears for as litte as $4 a piece. She explains, there are antique bears available in every price range. Bonnie Lou is not one to dress bears. “I don’t think bears need to be dressed like dolls, but a lot of people do and it’s all right,” she says.

Bonnie Lou will, however, put booties on the feet of bears with worn pads and if a bear is outfitted when she buys it she will leave it as is. Although she does not name her bears, she still feels that each one is special and different, with its own personality. Os the Cabbage Patch craze, she says, “I think it is very bad to raise children that way, (thinking of dolls as adoptive children) to make them believe that. A doll is a doll, and a child is a child. Just as a teddy bear is a teddy bear.” Bonnie Lou does not take much stock in the Cabbage Patch Doll craze, but she herself is the owner of two of the original 32-inch free standing dolls. To her, Cabbage Patch or not, they

are just another collectible. As for her bears, they have come from collectors and dealers throughout the United States. The majority were purchased in the area, however Most are from the Plymouth, Silver Lake, North Manchester, North Webster, Bristol, Columbia City, South Whitley or Fort Wayne areas. When purchasing her bears Bonnie Lou looks for several things. Since many of her bears are Steiff bears, a German firm famous for its early teddy bears, she looks for the pewter button pressed into the ear, a Steiff trademark in the 1900 s. If the button is missing, she then looks for a hole in the ear where the button once would have been. Because her bears date to the early 1900 s, she also watches for long snouts and arms, hump backs, sewn noses and shoe button eyes. Bonnie avoids purchasing bears which have been restored. “If they have been reparied in any way that cuts the value immensely,” she explains. She will, however, replace the bears’ eyes with antique blown eyes, another of her many collections of antique items. She also does not object to restorations done with materials correspondent to the era of the bears. Bonnie, who thinks of herself as a “Plain Jane” or a sort of “Second Hand Rose”, has found in her 10 to 15 years of experience with antiques that it can be easy to get cheated. Even dealers sometimes are taken in by reproductions, she explains. Her hobbies certainly suggest her serious interest in antiquing. “I read books on antiques and antique magazines. There’s not a more enjoyable thing to do,” she relates. “I don’t pretend to know it all for goodness sake. I know a lot and I don’t ieLa lot of information go by the wayside. I guess I’m an antiquer at heart,” she concludes.
