Student effort brings success
ByCHARLESHAFFNER Syracuse Junior High School Principal As the school year progresses many junior high school students grow and mature. Sometimes their mental and educational growth is not as easy to see as their physical growth. One has to look at how the students use their talents to determine how well their thinking patterns are maturing. At Syracuse Junior High School all. students have just completed participating in eliminations to determine the finalists who will take part in the school’s spelling bee. Some have studied diligently, some have tried halfheartedly, and others have not tried at all. Five students at each grade level have survived the elimination porcess and from among these students the champion will emerge. The value of this type of intellectual experience is in allowing a student to earn recognition based upon academic effort. Early in the school year several members of the seventh and eighth grades joined the school’s Kiwanis sponsored Builders’ Club. They ejected officers and have sponsored many activities. They have held swimming parties, scheduled fan

Individually, several students have also begun to set goals for themselves. They have started to work hard toward achieving their individual goals. Three such students are Cindy Nelson, Tom Mangas and David Schmahl. Cindy, an eighth grader, has been an honor roll student all three years at Syracuse Junior High School. She has participated on athletic teams and is the president of the school’s student council. Tom, a seventh grader, is also an honor roll student who has participated on all school athletic teams. During his two years in juinor high school, he has maintained an “A" average. David, a sixth grader, was elected to the student council this year and has been one of its most active members. He maintains a straight “A” average, while participating in all school activities. As the school year enters its last quarter the students who have set goals for themselves will have experienced much success for their efforts. This is also the time that* these students will put extra effort into reaching their goals.

Kindergarten census to be conducted The administration at the Syracuse Elementary School is conducting a census to determine the names of students who will be attending kindergarten at the Syracuse Elementary School next year. Children are eligible for admission to the kindergarten program if they are five years old on or before Sept. 1,1964 and they reside in Turkey Creek Township. The administration requests community cooperation to make the kindergarten survey accurate. Since there are families who will not receive a survey letter through the mail because they have no children currently in school, it is asked that those receiving letters share copies with friends and neighbors who have children ready to start kindergarten during the 1984-1985 school year. Residents with children eligible for kindergarten are asked to complete the bottom portion of the letter and return it to the school office. Extra forms may be obtained through the school office, located at 201 E. Brooklyn St., Syracuse. PICKWICK 45741 N THEATRE Syracuse I All SEATS $2.00 Fri. * Sat. 7 6 9.
