Lady Warriors close at 21-2 — Panthers put an end to Wawasee’s super season
By TOM CHARLES Sports Editor The greatest season in the history of Wawasee High School girls’ basketball came to an end Saturday with a 71-53 defeat at the hands of Fort Wayne Snider in the opening round of the Fori Wayne Semi-state. The Panthers were in control from the opening tip, building a seven-point lead in the first period. It was a day of frustration for the Lady Warriors who played brilliantly in the previous tournament games but were hampered by sickness in their first trip to the Colisuem. “We had a great season but we didn’t have it,today,’’ said coach Dale Brannock. “They outplayed us from the word go.” Snider used full-court pressure v to disrupt the Lady Warriors. Without the full services of junior guard Sandy Payne, who was still recovering from the flu, . Wawasee never seemed to get into the flow of the contest. - “We had some people standing on lhe press, and we weren't moving to the open spots,” noted Brannock

The inside game, which had been a big plus for Wawasee in post-season play, also belonged to Snider. Forwards Jeanie Wuest and Leslie Wimes combined for 22 points and 12 rebounds which helped to swing the balance in Snider’s favor? “We gave Wuest too many open shots,” Brannock. “She did more inside than I had anticipated. When we did make some defensive changes it was too little, too late.” “I think our inside people hurt them,” said Snider coach Lamar Kilmer. “We were trying to control the inside game and I think we did a nice job of it.” The Panthers also got a solid performance from 5’7” senior guard Becky Patterson. The sharpshooting Patterson, who took a 17.4 average into the contest, sank 23 points from the perimeter. The senior member of Wawasee’s outstanding guard trio. Dee Stump, had one of the finest games of her career. Her display of outside shooting netted 18 points, tops on the team. “She played as good a game under pressure as any I seen,”

noted Brannock. “It was a super performance.” Christy Speicher was the only other Wawasee player to hit double figures. The 5’10” junior canned four of five fielders and three of four charities for 11 points. Anita Swope had eight points, six of them in the second half. Michelle Harter played another fine game in a relief role, notching seven points and hauling down nine rebounds. Wawasee trailed by 12 at halftime and could not come closer than 10 the rest of the way. The Lady Warriors’ press, which proved so effective in both the sectional and regional, did little to upset Snider’s offensive tempo. “We’ve handled the press well ail year,” remarked Kilmer. "It didn’t give us too many problems today." Other Action With the win over Wawasee, Snider advanced to the championship game against Eastbrook. Eastbrook won the finale by the score of 52-45. Basketball candidate, Sharon Versyp, had 23 points and eight assists in the loss. The second-rated Panthers of Eastbrook now collide with topranked Crown Point in the opening contest of the state finals this Saturday in Indianapolis. Fifthranked Warren Central meets tenth-ranked Evansville Bosse in the second game. The championship is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. Super Season This was a season of firsts for girls’ basketball at Wawasee. From the first Northern Lakes Conference and Warsaw Regional titles to the most wins in a single season, this team put its mark in the school record books.
For the seniors, 'B4 was no surprise
For Marcia Sorensen and Dee Stump, Saturday’s semi-state loss was not simply the end of a season. It was the end of their high school careers. As the only seniors on this year’s record-setting team, Stump and Sorensen played important roles in what many fans expected would be a rebuilding year. “I wasn’t really surprised at our season,” Stump said. “Everyone told me that we wouldn’t be as good as last year. But I had confidence in the people coming up.” ‘‘l was really unsure,” Sorensen added. “The sophomores had untapped potential. But I was glad the way things turned out.” « Both seniors are quick to credit this team’s success to the players ability to work as a unit. Perhaps

“This team went farther than any other team,” said Brannock. “We achieved every major goal we set at the beginning of the year.” “The experience these kids gained, the experience the school and I gained by going to the semistate was tremendous.” he continued. “As you advance in the tournament, you pick up more pressure. That builds confidence. It is an experience that can never be taken away from these kids.” The Lady Warriors set several new records in the 1983-84 campaign. They recorded the best field goal percentage, 43.3 percent, the best free throw percen-
this was most evident in Wawasee’s three electrifying come-from-behind tournament wins. “There were no stars oh this team,” Sorensen said. “Some people did well one night and someone else did the job on other nights.” “I don’t know how to describe (the way we came back in the tournament),” Stump added. “We just grouped together and decided that we had to get going.” “We sort of found a determination we didn’t have at the beginning of the games,” Sorensen said. “We just knew we had to get going.” In those remarkable comebacks, the Lady Warriors displayed composure and calm under pressure. At least that was the case on the outside.

tage, 56.4 percent and the post wins, 21, in the school’s history. Dee Stump dished out 78 assists to bring her career total to a school-record 136. Sandy Payne’s 91 assists set a new single-season mark. Anita Swope broke the single-season mark for field goals made. Her 117 fielders edged out the old record of 106. Her season total of 266 points was the second highest in Lady Warrior history. “This team proved to me beyond a shadow of a doubt that people who work at their games will improve,” said Brannock. “This season was a surprise for a lot of people, but it wasn’t for me.”
“I was nervous in the Warsaw game,” Stump noted. ‘‘(Being behind) didn’t bother me that much in the other games. But in the Warsaw game I was scared to death.” This season was full of highlights that both players will take with them when they leave Wawasee. They picked winning the NLC and Warsaw Regional and the comeback wins as their most outstanding memories of the year. However, there are some things they cannot take with them upon graduation. Leaving high school basketball brings with it a certain sadness. ’ “I will miss the people — the players and the coaches — here at Wawasee,” Sorensen said. “I’ll miss the feeling of pride I had to be a part of Wawasee girls’ basketball," said Stump.

and Wildlife Agencies, according to the Department of Natural Resources. In making the announcement, Jim Ridenour, DNR director, indicated that 1983 was the second time the program has received a Class AAA rating from the association. “We re very proud of what the state has accomplished with an all volunteer program,” said Ridenour. “For the first time in its history, the program graduated more than 12,000 people in a single year.” Since the program’s inception in 1975, more than 80,000 people have been graduated from the eight-hour education course. The course provides instruction in many areas including gun and archery safety, wildlife management, conservation of natural resources and first aid. “We have witnessed a steady decline in the number of hunting accidents in recent years,” Ridenour said. “I sincerely believe that mush of this reduction can be attributed to hunter safety courses.” For more information on the DNR’s education course, contact the local conservation officer, or the Division of Law Enforcement, 606 State Office Building, Indianapolis, IN 46204.
