Pudding, polity and pursuit
By FRED WALLS Christian Church of Milford “There is always room for jello." In much the same way, “there is always room for change’’ (improvement). Church polity can and does play an important part in determining whether or not change will take place. Then, when the way is made clear through polity, the pursuit for fulfillment can begin to take place. It was Nov 25 and 26,1983, during the Indiana Christian Youth Convention held at Indianapolis. A vision of something marvelous happening with the junior high, senior high and singles started to form in the mind of Dave Benning. Mr Benning is a good friend, youth sponsor, Sunday School teacher and elder at the Christian Church of Milford. That afternoon and evening, Mr. Benning shared his vision with me. It was a tremendous pudding of an idea. If only we could convince others, if only they could see as we had seen The need was there, but in order to fulfill that need, we had to “go for it," and that’s exactly what happened May I share with you the situation 9 During the past 10 years, the Christian Church has provided a worship service, apart from the regular worship, for the junior high through college age This worship hour took place in the gymnasium located across the parking lot north of the church building This worship service fulfilled its objective, but because of the building itself, many problems existed — acoustical and lack of atmosphere 1 will restrain myself and not share all of them with you The vision Mr. Benning had was one that would not be impossible. although it would take a lot of work, a lot of changes would have to take place, and it would involve a lot of people. Knowing what could be ahead, we prayed fervently that the Lord would make way for the dream to become a reality “There is always room for

jello,” if people like jello. The next step was to take the vision which had now become our dream and present it to the elders of the congregation. After much discussion, the elders’ vote was unanimous. We had their permission. on a trial basis, to bring this dream into reality. The work was ahead. Before the reality of this dream could come into existence, many changes would have to take place. One such change would be that two Sunday School classes would have to relocate. Yes, one class would have to move from the room its had been meeting in since 1963. The question was. “How willing would they be?" Some of them have difficulty getting around because of age and health problems. The room they would have to meet in would be located up a flight of stairs. Would they be willing to do this so that the dream could come true 9 When approached with the plan, they considered the idea and after talking it over, they decided that the youth were worth the sacrifice they would have to make on their part. I know that God will bless them for the decision they have made. May I share with you the vision that is now reality? The vision was that we as a congregation provide for those involved a place where they could worship and have a worshipful atmosphere. There was no better place for this than the sanctuary. Since we couldn’t have two groups meeting in the same place at the same time, this was our thinking: During the Sunday School hour, the youth would have their service and after Youth Worship, the adults would come in for their worship services and the youth would then have their Sunday School hour. All the details were worked out and now a greater potential does exist for growth in both worship services. A pudding of a vision, worked through polity with prayer was pursued and became reality. A special worship service for special people, this is the way it. works, but first let me explain something. You have no doubt
heard of the generation gap. I don’t know how you feel concerning this but I do know how I feel. Any gap made between people is not God-made. I am not talking about character needs or differences, but gaps that are caused by lack of communication or the inability to communicate. The way it works is simple. We have a singles group of approximately 25 people ranging from age 18 to 30. This group is lead by Kevin Rhoads, the minister to singles. Many in this group have Elkhart District UMW sponsor political seminar “Making A Difference: Women in Electoral Politics,” a one-day seminar sponsored by the Elkhart District United Methodist Women will be held Saturday, March 3, at Grace United Methodist Church. 201 W. just gone through high school or college and they know what the high schoolers are going through. The high schoolers look up to the singles. Who would be most likely able to help the high schoolers get through those very tough four years? The people they look up to, the people who have just gone through it themselves. So the singles group ministers to the high schoolers. It’s the same way with the high school group concerning the junior highers. You might not think of the junior high years as being hard to get through but they are, the pressure starts early. You might also think that the high schoolers have so many problems that they couldn’t help anyone. They do have problems, but they can help. The high schoolers can help the junior highers to make it through their problems. The high schoolers minister to the junior highers. One group setting the standard, communicating with the other to the glory and praise of God. Will it work? Time will tell. It’s a special worship for a special people. Designed to meet their needs and help them get through those very crucial years. It’s a quality service, not second rate. Our young people deserve the best. It’s up to us to do our best to give them what they need, redeeming the time. Christian Center directors speak to Kiwanians Mr. and Mrs. Thorpe Mitchell, directors of the new Adult Christian movement located in the former Camelot Tavern building, spoke to the Lakeland Kiwanis Club at their Monday morning breakfast, Feb. 13. The Thorpes’ program has two parts. The first, is a program beamed toward the non-church-going adult community. The second part of the program deals with providing games, fellowship and recreation with adult super- t vision for youth after school hours and until 6 p.m.

Kosciusko County CROP registers best year ever
The Kosciusko County CROP program had its best fund-raising year ever, according to Larry Haney, county CROP chairman. A total high of $20,962 was raised, topping the 1977 record of $20,689 and last year’s total of $16,912. According to Haney, the record high which places Kosciusko County third in the state, behind Elkhart and Marion Counties, can be attributed to two main factors — the CROP Friendship Farm and the Tippecanoe/Turkey Creek Bowl-a-thon. The two netted $5,400 and $2,674 respectively. However, “it couldn’t have been done without each township and their efforts," the chairman noted. Recognition was given to: the Warsaw Bowl-a-thon; individual gifts; the Syracuse Union Thanksgiving Service; the Warsaw bowlers; and Monroe and Jackson Townships. The next opportunity to help CROP will be through the CROP Friendship Auction at the Goshen Fairgrounds on Saturday, May 19. Donations are needed, Haney said, and attendance at the event

During the past 20 years the Murk family has presented over 4,000 concerts in 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, Israel and Europe. They have been called “Chicagoland’s equivalent of the famous Von Trapp family singers who inspired ‘The Sound of Music.’ ” _ The family is a beaimful blend of voices and includes singing strings in a great variety of ensembles. The group includes Mom and Dad (Donna and Jim), daughters Beverly, Becky, and Brenda. Brenda’s husband, Bruce Jackson of Dayton, Ohio, accompanies on the keyboard and has added a new vocal dimension to the program with his rich baritone voice. Becky is married to David Gardner whose parents are missionaries in Colombia, South America. David is a pilot who has his own flying service. The Murks usually travel altogether in a 40 foot bus converted to a motor home, but recently, with David’s assistance, they have been flying small airplanes to theirmore distant engagements. The Murks have produced 18 LP recordings and have appeared many times on TV locally and nationally in the United States. Their family programs appeal to almost any kind of audience or age group. Everyone can empathize with the themes of love and cooperation in the home. The music of the family programs ranges from the finest of the classical to the best of the contemporary. More important to them is the ministry of spreading the love and joy that one can have through Christ especially in the building of a happy family.
