Warriors struggle, but Rochester falls 61 -43
By MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Writer Wawasee’s Warriors were not spectacular, but they did just what they needed to do in defeating Rochester 61-43, Friday, Feb. 3. For the Warriors, the win improves their overall record to 13-4, and 3-2 in the Northern Lakes Conference. Rochester falls to 4-12 on the campaign and 2-4 in the NLC. For many people in the Warrior gym, a blowout was expected? But despite the final 18-point spread between the teams, it never happened. With Wawasee pulling out to a early 14-10 lead after the first period of action, the Warriors found themselves outscored by the upset-minded Zebras in the second stanza. Behind the shooting of Bill Murhling, Rochester stayed close to the multi-dimensional War-

riors. With the 6’2” frontliner scoring at will from the inside, Rochester closed to within two, 25-23 at halftime. But that’s when John Wysong’s troops began to put their game together. Enforcing tight pressure on the ball, coupled with fine shooting from the perimeter, Wawasee methodically expanded its lead to 10 late in the third quarter. With momentum clearly swaying the Warriors’ way, the only issue that needed to be decided in the final eight minutes was Wawasee’s victorious point spread. Senior guard Kim Zurcher, who continued to sparkle at both ends of the court, netted eight of his game-high 24 points in the final period. With Zurcher’s consistency from the perimeter, nailing down 11 of his 16 shots from the field, and Brooks Koble playing exceptional defense of Rochester’s leading scorer, Scott

Zent, Wawasee pulled away from the Zebras. Zent, who entered the contest scoring well into double figures, was held to six points. Bill Murhling paced the Zebras* losing effort with 15 points. ‘‘The game was much closer than what the score indicated,” said Wysong. “We had a couple key breaks in the second half that opened things up for us.” “Koble’s shot that went in, although it was blocked was a big break for us,” added Wysong. “But Zurcher’s consistency was important as was Joel Rhoades and Koble having good third quarters.” Although Wawasee knotched up the victory, Wysong was not totally pleased with the performance turned in by his Warriors. “We really didn’t stop Rochester from doing anything, and that scares me, said Wysong. “That's one of the biggest areas of concern right now. When we are able stop other teams, then we are moving in the direction of being a great team.” Joining Zurcher, who finished with 24 points and seven assists, were Koble and Jon Vitaniemi. Koble concluded the evening with 14 points, while Vitaniemi chipped in 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Jeff Atwood pulled down eight boards for the Warriors. While Wawasee closed out with its 18-point victory, it also enjoyed shooting 26 of 48 from the field for 54 percent. Rochester on the other hand was ice cold. Connecting on just 20 of 52 shots from the perimeter, the Zebras’ 38 percent shooting proved to be the visitors’ downfall. With Wawasee clearly outshooting the Zebras from the field, neither team seemed to fare well from the charity stripe. Wawasee, which has had its problems from the line this season, managed to convert only nine of 16 for 56 percent. Meanwhile, Rochester made just three of its six attempts for 50 percent. One additional bright spot for the Warriors was their low turnover figure. Wawasee gave the ball away just four times in the contest, compared to Rochester’s 11 miscues. Junior Varsity In junior varsity action, Wawasee went one game over .500 with a 48-43 triumph over the Zebras. After a slow start at the beginning of the season, coach

Swimmers return 5 for NLC meet
The Wawasee swimmers dropped their record to 8-8 overall as " Culver Military trounced the injury plagued Warriors 122-50 last Thursday. The Warriors, who closed the regular portion of their schedule, are preparing for tomorrow’s Northern Lakes Conference meet at Plymouth. In the meet, Culver Military simply outmanned the visiting Warriors. Besides the five suspended swimmers, who will return to action in the NLC meet, coach Tim Caldwell also competed without four other swimmers. Wawasee’s Rob Jewson provided the Warriors with their only first-place finish. Entered in the 500-yard freestyle, Jewson easily defeated Culver’s closest competitor for the victory. Benj Reed, Steve Rozow and and Gary Miller provided the Warriors with three runner up positions as Wawasee trailed the entire meet. NLC Preview Although Wawasee finished in the NLC this season with an unimpressive 3-4 mark, they invade the conference title meet as one of four teams that could capture the event. “I would say Goshen is the favorite in the NLC meet,” said Caldwell. “But if we swim really well, we could have a chance at winning. I definitely wouldn’t count us out.” Making their return to the waters are five of the top swimmers for the Warriors. Should the idle Warriors pick up where they were when dismissed from the team, Wawasee could fare quite well in the competitive meet. r “You never know how they will perform,” said Caldwell about his five swimmers. “They haven’t swam in a while, but they have been practicing. Who knows, they could swim really well, or not.” Tomorrow’s preliminary action begins at the Plymouth High School pool, with finals held

Gymnasts fall to DeKalb
The Wawasee gymnastics team, hampered by injuries and sickness, could only manage a split with DeKalb in action last Thursday. The intermediate team raised its record to 4-2 with an 83.4-77.2 win. The optional team dropped an 89.85-79.9 decision. Wawasee winners on the intermediate level were Shelly Daniels and Michelle Leffler. Daniels won the uneven parallel bars while Leffler took top honors on the balance beam. Angie Graff placed first on the balance beam and also worked her way to second in the all around competition to lead the optional team. Raeni Rinker scored Wawasee’s only other first place. Her win came on the uneven parallel bars.
