Retirement community is slated for Ligonier
Ligonier Industrial Development Corporation announces plans for the creation of a retirement community in Ligonier. The facility will be named for the Kenney family in recognition of their generosity toward the community. The Kenney Retirement Community will provide a variety of housing and care alternatives for seniors on a 24-acre campus located on Ligonier’s western boundary at US 33 and Second Street. The housing and care options will be provided under a continuum of care concept. The continuum of care concept means that a range of services, including skilled and intermediate nursing care, assisted living, day care, respite care, home health care, housekeeping, meals on wheels, home maintenance and social activities, will be available to residents of the complex. The proximity of services allows elderly residents to remain in independent living units longer, increasing their freedom and holding down their health care costs. Planning for the first phase, a 60-bed nursing center and 25 independent residential units, is well underway. Financial projections and a justification of the need for nursing beds are under review now by the Indiana State Board of Health, Health Planning and Development Bureau. A construction start is projected for June, 1984. The Kenney Retirement Community is the most recent in a long line for the Ligonier Industrial Development Corporation, which has brought eight new companies and 1,500 new jobs to the community during its existence. Working in partnership with the Ligonier Industrial Development Corporation are Thomas E. Conner president of American State Bank, Harris F. Webber, president of Harris Webber, Ltd., the development consultant for the project. The firm of Harris Webber, Ltd., located in Northbrook, 111., was formed in December 1976, to specialize in the field of development and development consulting for housing for the elderly and retirement communities. In its seven years of existence, the
