By DEANE. MCFADDEN Bible Christian Church Much controversy has centered around the role of women in today’s society. Victorian ideas have long since been eroded by modern thinking. The women of the latter 20th century have been molded by such issues as the Equal Rights Amendment, sex discrimination court cases, abortion on demand and reversal of the traditional roles of men and women. The National Organization of Women has influenced the picture that is being painted of women today. No longer is she considered a persona non grata in such areas as politics, business or education The church has an important role to play in defining women's place in society, the church itself and the home. In order to discover the church’s view of women, it is best to see what the Bible (the church’s handbook > has to say. Both the Old and New Testamerits present a clear picture of what the women of God should be like In the Old Testament, various biographies of important women are presented Such ladies as Eve, Sarah. Ruth and Hannah give a view of what God expects in women These and other godly women are seen as virtuous (Ruth 3: ID. humble (Ruth 2:11), pious (1 Samuel 1:9-18) and kind (2 Kings 4:Bff >. Proverbs paints a glorious picture of the weaker sex in such passages as 11:16. 22; 12:4; 14 1; and 31:10-31. Women are also seen in the Old Testament as rulers (Judges 4:4; Nehemiah 2:6), prophetesses (Nehemiah 6:14) and as participants in worship as choir members (1 Chronicles 25:5-6). The New Testament also pinpoints various women as godly examples. Among them are Mary. Mary Magdalene. Lois. Eunice and Martha Women played important roles in Jesus' ministry Some financed His ministry (Luke 8:3); others remained at the cross when all others rjiad left (Matthew 27:55-56 q and still others were the first to arrive at the grave of our Lord and see Him resur-

rected (Mark 16:1-9). The early church enjoyed the presence of godly women (Acts 1114; 12:12-13). They were seen as key influences in the body of Christ (Titus 2:3-5). Women are honored in the New Testament in much the same way that they are in the Old Testament. Jesus extols the virtues of womanhood in His many associations with such ladies as Mary and Martha (Luke 10:38-42). He showed great respect for His mother and treated even women of ill repute with dignity (John 4:7-30). Paul defines the role of women in the church and home in 1 Corinthians 11:3-15 and 14:34 where he states that women are to be in subjection to their husbands and have no leadership over men in the church. While this may be demeaning in ap-

pearance, the apostle by no means held a low view of godly women. He praised such ladies in passages like Titus 2:3-5 and 2 Timothy 1:5. His picture of women in 1 Timothy 2:9-15 shows that in order to be godly, they must be modest, subject to authority and a doers of good works. Peter also sets this same picture in 1 Peter 3:1-6. The Bible clearly indicates that women are noble creatures made as compliments to men. The godly women are to be industrious, humble, sincere and useful in their ministry for God. Scripture does not place women in the home only. Many are seen as national leaders. In the church, their godly influence is felL Their homes are examples of the effect of a godly wife and mother. such offices as pastor or elder in the church, they can exhibit their gifts in other ways such as teaching other ladies or children. Though they are not head of their home, they are partnered with their husband in the upbringing, of children. They provide valuable counsel to the man in making decisions. Scripture never gives them the status as second class citizens. Rather, it is the wife that is the picture of the church. Scripture honors the godly women both as wives and mothers. It carefully defines their role in society, church and family. While they are to be submissive to their husbands and not lead in the church, they nonetheless are given great honor and praise as a beautiful part of the body of Christ.

God's word —

The Christian's sword

By DON ROSS Zion Chapel United Brethren Church w “The word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” Hebrews 4:12-13 There are many in our world that dispute that the word of God, the Bible, is relevant to our daily lives. They believe that the Bible has outlived its usefulness, or they want to modernize the scriptures. They say that it is time for the Bible to catch up with science or society. God’s word has stood for thousands of years, and has been proven correct in millions of lives. Instead of the Bible catching up with science, science and society should catch up with the Bible. The scripture that is printed above tells us that God’s word is living andactive. You may ask, “How can the printed page be active and alive?” The printed page itself does not become active, but the word of God becomes active and alive when we read it and apply it to our lives. ■ The word of God contains more than good advice or a set of morals. It contains a new and different life style. A life style so different that the scriptures tell us that to obtain it. "You must be born again.” John 3:7 In order for the word of God to become active and alive in your like, your life needs to change. The word of God will judge us, not just in our actions, but in our thoughts and attitudes. Many individuals believe that just because they have never stolen, murdered, or drank themselves into a stupor, that God will overlook anything else that they have done and let them come into heaven, but Jesus in Matthew 5:22 states that “anyone who says, ‘You fool I ’ will be in danger of the fire of hell.” If there is the danger of hell for saying "you fool,” what kind of punishment will we receive for our attitudes and our thoughts? , We have seen that the word of God will penetrate and judge

us, but for the Christian, the word of God is his sword. Ephesians 6:13-17 admonishes us to put on the full armor of God. “Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take up the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” God has given the Christian the protection needed to fight the good fight. He, like a good general, has outfitted His armv; for their battle against the evil one. but note one thing, the battle dress and the weapons that are provided are for offensive warfare. They will be of little use in a retreat A sword would be awfully hard to use if you were running backwards. The army of God is to be moving forward using the sword of the Spirit to allow others to see their need for God. Revelation 19:15 tells us that when our Lord and Saviour comes again, that the army that He leads will be riding white horses and dressed in white linen. Out of the Lord’s mouth comes a sharp sword with which He will strike down the nations of the world. The word of God will be the standard by which the world will be judged. The word of God will uncover everything before God. We are convicted by it. We are judged by it. It is the strength and protection of the Christian, and Jesus promises us that “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will last forever ” Matthew 24:35 The scriptures plainly state to those who depend on science and on today’s trends that those things will pass away, and it states that the Christian has God’s word to depend on forever That is quite a promise, and through the years it has been proven true. Leaders, generals, nations, kings and queens have come and gone, but the word of God is still here telling us the same thing. That is that we "must be born again" to receive eternal life. To the Christian, God’s word is truly His sword’
