Fad diets can be dangerous

On with the old, off with the new. If that seems a bit backward, think of it in dieting terms. You have added on to the old you, now you want to get rid of that new weight. But, how many times have you promised to reform, only to give up? Maybe the latest diet fad will be the answer to your weight loss prayer. If the only drawback of these diets were a dent in your illusions, then you would just end up a little wiser, even if not any lighter. However, many fad diets can be dangerous. The Food and Drug Administration has put together an article that will help you protect yourself from these fads. For your free copy of “Weight Loss,” send your name and address to the Consumer Information Center, Dept. 81, Pueblo, Colo. 81009. Many of the popular fad diets give a confusing array of advice: Eat mostly protein foods and few, if any, carbohydrates. Eat almost all carbohydrates and little protein. Eat all you want, but start with grapefruit. Eat only rice (or ice cream or fruit or

roughage). If you followed all of this advice, you might be close to a balanced diet. So before you start any major diet, do a number of things. Consult with your doctor, and, possibly, with a nutritionist or a dietitian. Do some reading on the basics of nutrition and how they relate to the claims by some of these diets. What are the claims and what is the reality? One kind of fad diet that promises a fast track to leanness is the high protein, low carbohydrate diet. The danger is that a low carbohydrate diet will throw the body into ketosis -a mode of burning calories that resembles the body’s reaction to fasting. It can lead to an acid and alkaline imbalance in the body, and it make the body excrete large amounts of urine which can lead to dehydration. Since most of the weight loss is from water loss, not fat loss, most people put the weight back on when they return to normal eating. Another diet of great concern to health care professionals is the extremely low calorie liquid pro-

NAAP convention held in Acapulco Management consultant and motivation speaker, Karl Kettering, addressed the annual convention of the National Association of Advertising Publishers January 23-27 in Acapulco, Mexico. Among those attending the convention were Ron and Gloria Baumgartner of Milford, president and assistant treasurer of The Papers Incorporated respectively. Kettering of Lancaster, Pa., and Sarasota, Fla., is president of his own consulting firm, Progress Through People, Inc., which specializes in human resources development. His topic was “Marketing — The Road to Success For Your Company.” Trung Von Do in minor accident Trung Van Do, 32, of 1110 South Main Street, Goshen, was southbound on SR 15 when his Volkswagen slid out of control and struck a snow pile along side the road, Tuesday, Jan. 31. Van Do, negotiating a curve in the road near CR 23, New Paris, failed to control his vehicle on the icy conditions. The 6:45 a.m. accident resulted in minor damage to the Van Do automobile, which was investigated by Sgt. Walter E. Miller of the Elkhart County Sheriff’s department. tein diet. Many of these diets promote drinking a high protein liquid as the only calorie consumption all day —a daily total of about 400 calories. These diets have been associated with deaths resulting from irregular heart rhythms. It’s important to realize that the key to dieting is to maintain a nutritionally balanced diet while changing your eating habits. But these fad diets don’t help you change eating habits because they are often based on only one food and become terribly boring in short order. The optimistic note the pamphlet points out is that most of the qbesity in the United States results from relatively small imbalances between daily calorie intake and expenditures. That means that 100 extra calories daily — one extra piece of toast — can add 10 pounds over the course of a year. So the good news is that by simply watching those small amounts of food daily and adding slightly more exercise to burn a few more calories, you can get rid of the extra pounds slowly but successfully. And if you do want to lose more weight over a shorter period of time, any of the balanced diets that appear in newspaper or magazines will help. Look for one that has around 1,000 to 1,200 calories a day and suggests that you add exercise as a regular part of your day to help keep your weight under control. To learn more, send for a copy of “Weight Loss” (free). At the same time, you will also receive a free copy of the Consumer Information Catalog listing more than 200 other free and moderately priced federal consumer booklets. The Catalog is published quarterly by the Consumer Information Center of the U.S. General Services Administration. y APRIL WEDDING PLANNED — Mr. and Mrs. Richard Kaiser of r 2 Milford annonnce the engagement of their daughter.
