"Classic story" ... Wysong’s fairy tale

I By MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Writer What people visualize and understand can be two totally different things. John Wysong’s contrasting emotional coaching style, with his devotion for his wife, Dawn, and others is a prime example. Although John sometimes has trouble controlling his behavior on the bench during basketball games, he has a warm and sensitive heart towards others. This inward warmth might not always appear to local basketball fans, but Dawn has never doubted his sensitivity. “John is a very open and honest person,” she said. “Those are two of his strong points, along with being very much interested in his players a§ people.” Wysong. who understands the game better than most coaches his age. also realizes the similarity of basketball to other parts of life Basketball players need to compliment each other to be a successful team. Likewise, the Wysongs use their strengths and weaknesses to aid each other .'' Their story is the classic story of the basketball star marrying 4he beautiful cheerleader and living happily ever after. High School sweethaearts at Fairfield, both enrolled at TriState University and continued their lengthy dating relationship which culminated in a July. 1978 wedding. Since then, the Wysongs have shared many moments together, never being hampered by the heavy demand of basketball.

Sharing joys and sorrows with his wife has made Wysong’s coaching job all that much easier. “She is very supportive of me as a person, and as a coach,” he praised. “She is the biggest fan the ‘pygmies’ have ever had.” “I’m a Wawasee basketball fan,” said Dawn, a Bremen High School teacher. “I go to all the games, and sometimes c go with John when he scouts. 8 ’ While Wysong works very hard at school, both in the classroom and on the hardwood floor, the spirited coach also knows when to step aside and remove himself from the pressure. “When I am at school, I work very hard,” said Wysong. “But when I’m home my number one goal is to have fun, and boy f really have a lot of fun. That keeps me fresh.” Having fun could be an understatement. Both have always enjoyed athletics, although from different sides of the sport. Still, they participate together in working out as John lifts weights, while Dawn jumps on the mini trampoline. Although basketball takes up much of the time around their home during the season, both enjoy oustide activities and visiting their parents. With both families living in New Paris, the Wysongs have ample time to keep informed of family news, while enjoying several sports. Cross-country skiing, riding horses, several other outside activities and church related activities entertain the Wysongs throughout the year. With John s constant enjoyment at home, working with the players at Wawasee has also been enjoyable.

“What makes coaching fun for me is that I pick out different characteristics of the players,” said Wysong. “Then I get to like them so well because they are all individuals, and they’ll do things that will make me laugh, sometimes so hard that I can’t stop. They are so unique.” “I think this is why I get interested in the players,” said Dawn. “John brings that home with him and I get to know them better .. better than they think I do.” But Dawn has not enjoyed fan abuse directed towards John and the players. “Hearing negative statements about John doesn’t bother me as much as hearing them yell at the kids,” said Dawn. “It’s part of his job, unfortunately, but the kids work hard in practice.” The role of a coach’s wife often times is less than desireable because of the constant pressure to win. But John handles the win-loss situation differently than many coaches which reduces some of the pressure at home following a tough loss. Wysong places a greater emphasis on the performance itself instead of the end product, a victory or defeat. “I don’t try to handle John s emotions after a game,” said Dawn. “I try to be a good listener, and not get involved in the coaching part of the game. That’s really not my place to be, I don’t know enough to say much.” “Sometimes it’s easy when they lose, and sometimes it’s hard,” informed Dawn. “There have only been a couple times when I worried what I was going to say, or how it was going to be when John
