Whats happening to the world?

By DR. GARY M. TUTTLE Rock Church We are again at the end of one year and standing at the beginning of another. The thought that comes to the minds of many people is, “What’s happening to the world”? We have had many unsettling events in the last year. There was the great loss of life in Lebanon with America becoming involved in a seemingly no win situation. The latest thing is the installation of ground to air missiles to protect the White House and Capital building. One might truly say, “What’s wrong with this old world?” I can tell you what’s wrong with the world in one word: sin. Sin is rebellion against God, who created a beautiful and perfect world. He created the world for his enjoyment, but what happened? Did God make a mistake? No. He made man with a free will to choose what he desires. Many make light of the record of man’s4alHn the Bible, but herein is the problem with the world. When man ate the forbidden fruit, he chose to follow Satan in- / stead of the Almighty God. Man chose Satan as his god, and we have been reaping the results of Satan’s control ever since. With this control came death, rebellion, disorder, chaos, ugliness, poverty, hunger, sickness, disease, lust, error, selfishness, hatred, destruction, fear, pride, crime, injustice, fighting and wars. All of this sounds like there is no hope for the world, but there is hope, plenty of it. God hasn’t given up on the world, but is sovereign and the supreme power, having the highest authority. God still loves man, in spite of all his sin. This love has brought us away to be saved from all the /vils of the world — Jesus Christ. The baby in the manger was born to be the Christ on the cross. Perhaps one of the best known verses in history says it best, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him, shall not perish, but have

everlasting life.” The key word is “whosoever.” This includes all who would receive Jesus as their Savior. Someone had to pay the price for man’s sin. But you can’t buy salvation, or work your way into heaven. Man was born into a fallen world himself, and the only way to receive forgiveness is to give your sin to Jesus, and take His rightousness. In this old world, you can be made a new creation, and look forward to living in a perfect world. But how do you begin to change the world? By changing yourself. What’s happening to the world?

SNOWY SCENE — All residents have been seeing snowy scenes like this one of the Milford First Brethren Church since last week when snows blanketed the area. The snow, accompanied by high winds and subzero temperatures, forced many area churches to cancel Christmas Day services.

God’s purposes are being carried out against sin. As we begin the New Year, perhaps the words of Jesus in Luke 21 are more appropriate now than ever before: “There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and the tossing of the sea. Men will faint in terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world....At that time, they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift your heads up, because your redemption is drawing near.”

sn TAKE YOUR BIBLE OFF THE SHELF AND START READING IT people spend much of their lives accumutating an extensive library that contains all the finest works of literature through the ages. Perhaps you are one of them, but even if your collection is somewhat more modest than that you can still feel justifiably proud of it; for if it includes a Bible you may consider your bookshelf complete. However, your copy of the Scriptures will do you no good unless you take it down from the shelf and start reading it, a little at a time. You will find it fascinating and inspiring; and the very age of the writings will impress you with their eternal validity. The Bible will enable you to attend your House of Worship with a better understanding of your faith; for it is timeless, and so is the advice it contains for a good life in the manner in which we were all meant to live it. Newspaper BIBLE THIS GOOD NEWS IS FOR YOU! When Jesus came to the village of Nazareth, His boyhood home. He went as usual to the synagogue on Saturday, and stood up to read the Scriptures. The book of Isaiah the prophet was handed to Him, and He opened it to the place where it says: "The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me; to preach Good News to the poor; He has sent Me to announce that captives shall be released and the blind shall see. that the downtrodden shall be freed from their oppressors, and that God is ready to give blessings to all who come to Him." He closed the book and handed it back to the attendant and sat down, while everyone in the synagogue gazed at Him intently. Then He added, "These Scriptures came true today!* All who were there spoke well of Him and were amazed by the beautiful words that fell from His lips. "How can this be?" they asked. "Isn’t this Joseph’s son?" Luke 4:58-22
