Accident fatally injures former Syracuse woman
Eleanore Diane Martin, 41, 500 W. Melrose, Chicago, a former Syracuse resident and Syracuse High School graduate, was fatally injured and her parents, Roger and Lucille Martin, r 3 Syracuse, injured, in a van-semi accident Thursday morning, Dec. 8, at 8:42 a.m. The accident occurred on US 30 near Hamlet. Miss Martin died at approximately 9 a m. CST at Starke County Memorial Hospital, Knox, of head and internal injuries. She was a passenger in the van driven by her mother. Her father, also a passenger, suffered severe facial lacerations and a broken right hand. Her mother suffered a broken clavical and leg in addition to sustaining minor lacerations. They were both taken to Starke County Memorial Hospital and released Monday. into the passing lane. Robert Drestil, 47, r 1 Bryant, driver of a semi was in the passing lane preparing to pass the Martin vehicle, when the van entered that portion of the highway. The semi hit the van broadside. Drestil suffered a broken finger. Commercial Artist Miss Martin was bom on October 31,1942, in Hinsdale, 111., to Roger and Lucille (McCain) Martin. She was raised in the Syracuse area and graduated from Syracuse High School. Miss Martin attended the American Academy of Art, Chicago, 111., and was employed by Flexo-Design, Chicago. She had lived in Chicago at least 22 years. In addition to her parents, survivors include her brother, Kenneth Martin, Syracuse, a Goshen attorney. Private services were conducted Monday, Dec. 12, at 2 p.m., in the Harris Funeral Home, SR 13S Syracuse. Burial was in Syracuse cemetery. Felmo Bird Friends Church Member Felma Routh Bird, 77, Fort Wayne, died in Lutheran Hospital there Sunday, Dec. 4. Miss Bird was a member of the Friends Memorial Church, Muncie. Survivors include two sisters, Marceil Grove, Syracuse and Cletis Miller, Muncie Services were held Thursday at Meeks Mortuary, Muncie, with burial in Elmridge cemetery there. Joseph Godsholk Retired Former Joseph (Ray) Godshalk, 73, r 2, Leesburg, died at General Hospital at 1:26 a m. Friday, Dec. 9, following a lengthy illness. Mr. Godshalk, a retired farmer, was born August 24,1910, on a farm in the LeesburgSyracuse area, son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Harvey (Loretta Noel) Godshalk. His survivors include: three
daughters, Mrs. Edward (Nancy) Handgen, Warsaw, Mrs. Maurice (Judy) Neibert, Sebring, Fla., and Mrs. Lewis (Sue) Neibert, Leesburg; a son, Jerry Steven Godshalk, Leesburg; 15 grandchildren; three greatgrandchildren; 'and three brothers, Ted, Mishawaka, Charles, Syracuse and Henry, Bristol. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. Services were held Sunday at Mishler Funeral Home, with burial in the Milford cemetery. Wensel Musk Sotf-Employod Carpenter Wensel (Slim) Music, 63, Phoenix, Ariz., died in Phoenix Baptist Hospital Saturday, Nov. 26. Wensel and his wife, the former Clela Leedy, were former Pierceton residents. He had been self-employed as a carpenter. Surviving in addition to his wife are: sister-in-laws, Norma Engelberth, Pierceton, Mabel Mort, Milford; and children, Penny Gibson, Jenny Ketron, John Music and Jerry Music. The funeral was conducted in Sun City, Ariz.. John Baker Former Owner Os Baker's Case John C. Baker, 75, North Webster, who owned and operated Baker’s Case in North Websterr for many years, died in Kosciusko County Hospital at 7 a m. Friday, Dec. 9. Born August 21, 1908, in Mathews, the son of John and Belle (Swaney) Baker, hw married Louise M. Riggers in 1939. She died in 1973. In March 1980, Mr. Baker married Evelyn Johanson, who survives. He resided in North Webster for 36 years and was a member of the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Warsaw. Also surviving are: a daughter, Mrs. Larry (Caroline) Hemmer, Warsaw; four stepsons, Phillip Barwick, Middlebury, Harold Barwick, Elkhart, Phillip Barkwick, Chicago, 111., and Wade Barwick, Sarasota, Fla.; a brother, Joseph Baker, Wichita, Kan.; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Services were held Monday at the Harris Funeral Home, with burial in the North Webster cemetery. Ida Gibson Former Milford Resident Ida Mae Gibson, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Clagett-, was born on July 20,1895, at Gilmore City. When she was two years old her mother died and she then went to Story City-Jewell area to live and she received her education there. Before moving to Indiana she resided in Eagle Grove. On October 5,1918, she married Gerald Gibson at Elkhart. The couple made their home in Elkhart, later moving to Milford. N They moved to Eagle Grove in 1949 where they owned and operated the Maid-Rite Sandwich Shop for many years. After their retirement, they in later years, became residents of the Villa Care Center in Fort Dodge and later of the Clarion Care Center. Mr. Gibson died on June 7,1980. In the fall of 1980, Ida moved back to Elkhart and became a
resident of the Medco Center, where she died Saturday, Nov. 6, at 88 years of age. Survivors include: two daughters, Mrs. Leta Holden, Elkhart and Alice Gibson, Chicago, Ill.; a son, Kyle B. Gibson, Sacramento, Calif.; five grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren; her step-mother, Mrs. Blanche Marie Clagett, Clarion; two half-brothers, R. Caroll Clagett, Clarion and Grayson Clagett, Boone. Services were , held on November 9 at the Troy Township cemetery, Eagle Grove. Dayton, Ohio, he manned Myrtle Field on October 12, 1946, in Nappanee. Williams retired in 1976 after 22 years at the Chesterton Tribune. Prior to this time he was employed by the Nappanee Advance-News. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930’s and in the US Army during World War 11. He was also a council member of the Chesterton Boy Scouts of America. Kuilema and his wife, Jacqueline, returned to the area Saturday, Dec. 10. Kuilema was admitted to Goshen Hospital where doctors are watching his blood count. Mrs. Kuilema stated her husband suffered a light stroke on November 30, while in Memphis, Tenn., visiting their son, Dan. He is in room 308 at Goshen Hospital. It’s hard to know Gun explodes, man loses left hand Kosciusko County’s first hunting accident claimed the left hand and wrist of 39-year-old Amos A. Poe, Leesburg. Poe, who was hunting with a friend had finished hunting along CRs 500 N and 300 W when his gun exploded causing the injury. According to local authorities, Poe had just signaled Dennis Archer, also from Leesburg, with a shot in the air that he was finished hunting for the day. After reloading his gun one more time, the firearm exploded. Poe was admitted to Kosciusko Community Hospital, and was listed in satisfactory condition. After having surgery Saturday, Dec. 10., Poe returned for additional surgery Monday, Dec. 12.

He was a former Lake Tippecanoe resident, but had moved to Venice, Fla. The deceased operated a retail liquor store in North Webster prior to selling the store and moving to Florida. He was born February 4,1911, near Flora, in Carroll County and married Helen Brown on November 20, 1937. He was employed with National Cash Register for over 30 years, and

Weekly classes on calorie control for diabetics and for weight reduction are now being taught on a regular basis. Taught by hospital dietician, Webster police officer resigns Deputy Peter Capotosto has resigned from the North Webster police force effective December 9. Capotosto started with the force as a reserve officer in May and on June 1 became a full-time deputy. After an approximate seven-month term with the force he has announced his resignation. He will be returning to his home in New York. According to Clerk Treasurer Eve Payne no formal letter of resignation has been received by her office at this time.

Conkle, 74, 1404 East Main St., Warsaw, died at Mason Health Care Facility at 12:25 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 11. Conkle, former superintendent of the Indiana State Highway Department Warsaw office from 1962-1969, had been in failing health. The son of Everett C. and Alta (McHenry) Conkle, hew was born in Huntington July 20, 1909. In Rochester, October 5, 1940, he was united in marriage to Ruby Cochran, who survives. The organization for junior and senior students is open by invitation only, and members must have a grade-point average of 5.5 on a scale of 6.0, The society recognizes scholastic achievement and provides economic assistance to outstanding members through scholarships. Armina Schmucker, the twosession classes are held from 1-2 p.m. each Wednesday and Thursday, in the hospital’s fourth floor conference room. There is no charge for this class. Space is limited each week and persons wishing to participate are urged to call 267-3200, extension 131, between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to make reservations. Family members are also invited to attend. The classes will cover such topics as meal patterns, food exchange groups, methods of food preparation, and information on food purchasing, dining out, cook books and eating when ill.

County Democrat Chairman for eight years; treasurer of the state Democratic organization; former owner and operator of the Tot & Teen Shops in Warsaw and Rochester; accountant and manager of an auto agency in Rochester before moving to Warsaw; member of the Warsaw Masonic Lodge F & AM; Asheville Scottish Rite; and Fort Wayne Mizpah Shrine Club. Other survivors are: three daughters. The EMS received the call at 11:53 after he became ill. Joseph Pippenger, 76, P.O. Box 230 G Syracuse, was taken to Goshen Hospital by Syracuse Emergency Medical Service on Monday, Dec. 12.
