These items also adorned the tree in the fellowship room. Annie Replogle, Nancy Snider and Arlene Cory gave Christmas remembrances of their childhoods and Melissa Snider sang “Angels We Have Heard on High.” For another part of the program, Betty Smith read “Christmas Is Remembering” and the group sang childhood Christmas songs. By O. BEX UNDEMOOD North Webster United Methodist Church As I look at Christmas 1983 with video games — computers, Cabbage Patch and military dolls — along with wines and liquors, something inside me cries out for an old fashioned Christmas. I am quite sure that the most mod and futuristic Christmas that one could celebrate would be a Christmas of the 19305, 40s or 50s. I remember my mother always read Lloyd C. Douglas' “Home for Christmas.” We lived in Missouri and later Idaho in those days. Now I live just a few miles from the place that was “home” for Christmas. Truly a small world. When I think of Christmas as a boy, I remember two things besides the fun and happiness. Those two things were temperance and peace. In the old days, folks, the word temperance meant abstinence from the use of alcoholic beverage. The first Sunday of Advent — the last Sunday of November was always Pledge Sunday at which time we took “the pledge’’ to promise ourselves we would go another year without taking a drink of wine, beer or liquor. In the 19505, the Methodist Church had a campaign in which families promised each other that they would abstain from the use of alcohol. Some place along the line we have accepted the fact (I wonder if it wasn’t advertising) that temperance is moderation in all things. My reading this year says that one of the world’s leading problems is alcohol. We Americans hold this problem in common with Russia, China, Japan, France and Germany. The medical profession is warning us. Churches stressed the importance of not drinking alcohol all through the 1920 s to mid-19505. It is still the only problem in America that has caused two Constitutional Amendments. I have been related to AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) since 1949 and last Sunday night at the AA Christmas Party of the North

Webster group which celebrated its 37th year, I heard for the first time said the key thing in “the program” is Don’t Drink. The only way I know to stay sober is to not take the first drink. I have seen marriage problem after marriage problem compounded by drinking beer, wine and what used to be whiskey but is now vodka. Not enough money and quarreling so we drink and it gets worse. The second thing I remember about Christmas in the old days was peace. I remember all of the excitement of saving, keeping secrets, making Christmas presents. You’d be so wound up when you hit the bed you’d think you’d never be able to go to sleep. Then you’d remember the star, shepherds, wisemen, Mary and Joseph, The Baby. The next thing, an older brother, a little sister would awaken you for the tree Christmas morning. Mom and Dad wished we’d go back to bed. Then family time. No

Circles plan December meetings
The three ladies’ circles at Calvary United Methodist Church met during the month of November with the following individual reports: Ruth Circle met at the church after the United Methodist Women held its general meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 16. there was no television. Peace meant no more war. 1 remember when my brother was in the South Pacific during World War 11. We kept the tree up until he came home in April — no needles on it, but we sure had a Christmas when he came home from the Navy. Peace at Christmas is no war — shooting or fighting among peoples of the earth. It also means the quiet of the manger scene. Peace means God with us. Peace is for the world but also for a person’s own world. Christmas is all of God’s love given to us in the person of His Son Jesus. God’s gift of Jesus to us all is peace when one is caught up in the why questions. God’s love gift of Jesus gives a quiet, a tolerance, an acceptance, even an endurance to the situations of human living which can be described only as peace. Peace that passes all understanding. Two things: peace - don’t drink alcohol. Merry Christmas.
Lucy Maves served breakfast and Lillian Disher, treasurer, was the program leader who presented an appropriate program for the thank offering month. Betty Eaton conducted the business meeting. A Christmas gift shower for Bashor Home will be held Wednesday, Dec. 21, for that month’s meeting. The Lois Circle meeting was opened with a reading by Carl Holt entitled, “Insight,” on Monday, Nov. 21, at 1 p.m. in the youth room. Opal Nolan and Wava Witmer were hostesses for the 10 members and one guest, Mrs. Dorothy Thomas, who attended. Millie Shively was in charge of the business meeting and Mildred Nicolai gave the program, “Thank God Now,” from the Daily Word. Thank offering boxes were also presented to the group. A farewell gift was given to Izel Beck who will be moving to bard Hill with Mrs. Calvin Beck. The December meeting is set for the 21st.
