Brouwer gains success

With girls' athletics growing closer in similarity to boys' competition, Barb Brouwer, girls' JV basketball coach, shares her thoughts on the changes ol girls' athletics as a former player, and how she dealt with a possible career ending injury. Her insight in both areas has helped upgrade the girls' athletic program at Wawasee By MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Writer The word success has a ‘traveling’ definition. For some people it might mean personal glory and fame, while to others, just doing your best equals success. Whatever the definition, Wawasee’s junior varsity basketball coach Barb Brouwer has experienced success throughout her athletic career. Actively involved in athletics during her high school and college years, Brouwer, an algebra teacher at Wawasee, has received acclaim for her accomplishments as a coach. Under Brouwer’s guidance, the Warrior JV’s have recorded a 42-3 mark, excluding this year’s results. A lifelong Syracuse resident, Brouwer has visualized the heights of success as a member of the 1976 440-yard relay team that captured the state championship. Yet, with state-wide fame, she also has witnessed disappointment when a severe knee injury almost sidelined her athletic interests while at Adrian College. Graduating from Wawasee with athletic honors in 1976, Brouwer discovered the other side of the rainbow while at the Michigan college. Starting on the Bulldog women’s basketball team as a freshmen, Brouwer severely tore ligaments in her right knee during her final year at Adrian The former Warrior standout learned some valuable lessons through the injury along with gaining incentives, which have helped her coaching skills. Although this injury is not uncommon for athletes, the severity of the injury caused Brouwer to dwell on the possibility of losing her athletic talents.

“The hardest part of an injury like mine is psychological,” said Brouwer. “You always wonder if you will ever be as fast as you were, or simply as good as you once were. I am just thankful that I can compete at the level 1 am at. Doctors at first told me that I

The North Webster eighth grade boys raised their record to 4-0 with a 33-29 comeback win over Columbia City at North Webster on Thursday. Coach Mike Hall’s squad, which trailed 24-12 at the half, rallied to outscore its opponents 13-1 in the final stanza for the win. Darin Atwood continued his fine play, scoring 15 points to lead the team. Basil Bonner pulled down seven rebounds. would never be able to play again.’’ Known for her competiveness, Brouwer motivated herself after hearing of a possible end to her athletic activities and rehabilitated her knee. The rehabilitation process has been long and hard. After playing on the injured knee two years, Brouwer finally went under the knife in October, 1982, to repair the torn ligaments. With the corrective surgery, Brouwer finally started her climb back to recovery Brouwer’s ‘ups’ athletically have shaped her coaching style and intensity. But more so, her downs’ have aided greatly in her working with Wawasee’s women’s program. “Coming out of college and into a high school coaching situation, my injury helped me because I wasn’t physically ahle to play,” said Brouwer. “But instead I was able to work with others and help them reach their potential.” Similiar to her playing career, and injuries, Brouwer has found it to be somewhat difficult at Wawasee in her three years of coaching. “There were some adjustments I needed to make coming back to Wawasee to coach,” informed Brouwer. “They weren’t used to winning and had a losing attitude. Also, they didn’t like me at first because I worked them really hard. I still work them hard, but it's different now.” Though the personable coach has adapted to circumstances for her coaching style, she also has witnessed noteworthy changes in women’s athletics since she was a player. “To a degree, most everything is the same,” informed Brouwer. “But I think there’s better community interest now, they play a larger schedule, and the media coverage is better." But there are some changes too. “Lately I am seeing athletic programs becoming more specialized, like the boys’ program,” said Brouwer. “Right now we don’t have many girls playing just basketball, like the guys. Most girls here play two or three sports, which I think is good because that way they don’t get burned out as quickly.” Yet with the age of specialization, the Wawasee’s women’s program has caught up with the boys’. Similiar to John Wysong’s program, the girls’ also scout each

Pins by Chris Yoder, Jack McDaniel, Ned Hunsberger and Don Kauffman enabled the junior Warriors to emerge with a 24-6 win. Milford 6th The Milford sixth grade boys dropped both of their contests with Nappanee on December 5 at Milford. Despite improved play on Milford’s part, the visitors came out on top by scores of 23-10 and 14-8.

We have a lot of good athletes, but no great ones.” In her days, both at the high school and in college, Brouwer aimed her sights on being a great’ player. “I worked hard at being better than the best,” smiled Brouwer. “Being an athlete, you have to practice all the time. At Adrian I played at least one hour of basketball a day during the off season. It took a lot of work, but I don’t regret it at all.” While playing basketball at Wawasee in the middle 70’s, Brouwer amassed several records. But now as the feats are beginning to fall, she takes it all in stride. "Records are important because it gives the players recognition,” said Brouwer. “I think it’s time for someone else to break my records and be recognized." Through good and bad moments athletically, Brouwer has developed into a quality coach, along with a friend to her players. When time permits, Brouwer enjoys taking her players to see the quality of womens basketball in the area.
