I’m always too busy at Christmas to send cards and besides they can be purchased at half price in January.
With the price of postage stamps at 20 cents each the tradition of sending Christmas greetings is fast becoming a thing of the past. Those treasured notes and letters from friends and relatives, living far away, will be missed. But cards from people who are trying to boost their businesses, political careers or social status can be a nuisance. For years we received a Christmas card from Stacy and Leslie (no last name) with a return address at Philadelphia, Pa. To this day we haven’t figured out who they could possibly be. We can’t remember ever meeting anyone from Philadelphia. That sort of card does provide conversation on cold wilder evenings. An hour or two can be spent reviewing your entire life trying to recall someone named Stacy or Leslie and which one is which or are they sisters or brothers? The cards that cause real knuckle biting are the “mystery cards” from people in another town or state that come with no return address but scribbled inside is the note, “We’ve moved since last year. Everyone doing fine since the divorce. The twins are now two months old.” Then there are the unsigned greetings and the poor hassled soul who sends two cards to the same person, the cards that are too pretty to throw out after Christmas but you’re not really sure what to do with them and the problem of displaying the cards so they can all be seen and enjoyed. Children of future generations will have to hear about Christmas cards by listening to grown ups reminising about the “Good old days” and how wonderful it was the year, “We got over 100 cards and about half of them from people we hardly knew. ”
