Warriors hand Concord 57-30 defeat for first NIC victory
By MARK WEINSTEIN Sports Writer It wasn’t a spectacular basketball performance by the Wawasee Warriors, but it was good enough to hand the Warriors a 57-30 victory over the Concord Minutemen Friday night. Concord, 0-3, played the host Warriors close throughout the first 16 minutes of the game, as they trailed by no more than seven points during the first half. But Wysong’s squad stormed out into the third period to steamroll past the Minutemen. “I really thought they played us tough in the first half,’’ said Wysong. “But right around the third quarter we had some breaks, and it was over from then on.”

Wawasee, suffering through its coldest shooting performance of the year allowed the Minutemen to stay close. The Warriors who have been shooting near the 60 per cent figure during their first three games, were ice cold in the first half connecting on 10 of 27 for 37 per cent. Wawasee warmed up slightly in the final half of action as they concluded the evening 22 of 49 for 45 per cent. “I think part of the reason why we didn't shoot well was because they put better pressure on the ball than anyother team we have played so far,” said Wysong. After holding to its 12-10 first quarter lead, Wawasee expanded the margin to seven points over the stubborn Minutemen heading into the lockerroom at the half.
Concord, who’s been known for playing teams tough for one half, continued the trend against the Warriors. The Minutemen, who battled Warsaw, Wawasee’s opponent Friday night evenly through the first half last week, never came closer than the seven point spread at the half. During the final half, Concord managed just 12 points, while the Warriors, ran off 32 in running away from Concord. Jon Vitaniemi, being forced to sit the bench through part of the third, and most of the fourth quarters slowly lead Wawasee’s offense as it expanded the lead. Vitaniemi, who saw limited action because of foul trouble paced the Warrior’s offensive attack. The 6’3” senior netted 18 points while grabbing eight of the teams 32 rebounds. Brooks Koble, who weathered much of the pressure from the ill Kim Zurcher chipped in with 17 points, while grabbing seven rebounds from his guard position. Seth Swihart, who was Zurcher’s replacement, added six points, while directing the Warrior attack. Harkness left a mark in history Jerry Harkness of the Indiana Pacers played only 81 games in the ABA, but in one of them he left a mark that has stood through the past 16 years — the longest shot in pro basketball history. season game with Dallas on November 13,1967, the first year of the ABA. Dallas had seored a basket with just seconds remaining to go ahead by two .points. Harkness, who had entered the game for Indiana only a few minutes earlier for injured Freddie Lewis, took the inbounds pass with two seconds left in the game. “1 was near the baseline and the sideline and I just heaved the ball with all I had the length of the court,” he recalls. “The buzzer went off and then the ball hit the backboard and went right through the basket.” “Everyone was stunned. The fans stopped screaming and we all thought the game was going into overtime. It must have been five seconds before we realized that the basket was a three-point goal, and we won the game.” The distance? 88 feet!!
