Down Rochester 55-31— Lady Warriors raise record to 4-0
By TOM CHARLES Sports Writer The Lady Warriors stumbled their way through a sluggish first period before getting on track to defeat Rochester 55-31 for their fourth consecutive win of the season. For the Zebras it was the second loss in three outings.

“The kids were really sluggish tonight,” commented coach Dale Brannock. “We couldn’t really do anything at the beginning. We always seem to play this way (at Rochester) for some reason.” Whatever the jinx in the Rochester gym, it was certainly evident in the first quarter last
night. The Zebras jumped out to an early 5-2 lead thanks to some superior work on the boards. That, combined with the Lady Warriors inability to get their offense on track, made it a see-saw contest for most of the initial stanza. Following a time out late in the period, Brannock brought his team out in a full-court press. This appeared to put some life into his fivesome who responded by forcing several Rochester turnovers and pulling out to a 12-9 lead at the quarter break. “The press set the tone for the game,” Brannock said. “Rochester is a young team and doesn’t handle the press well at all.” In the second quarter, the Wawasee fans who had made the trip were treated to another fine exhibition of how to run the fullcourt game. Pressing on the defensive end and running the fast break on offense, the Lady Warriors pulled out to a 28-9 lead. The Zebras, who got the majority of their points inside, could not find a method of breaking Wawasee’s press or zone defense. The Lady Warriors packed the effectively packed the middle and kept the ball away from Rochester’s big gun, Terri Cohagan. Meanwhile, Dee Stump, San-

dy Payne and Anita Swope were off to the races once again. Swope was particularly devastating in the first half with several breakaways for easy layups. She ended the half with 16 points. It was all Wawasee in the second half as the Lady Warriors continued to run the break. Rochester was simply outhustled and out-skilled by the shorter Wawasee team. Brannock backed off of the press in the third period, but continued to use the zone. When Brannock pulled his starting five in the fourth quarter Rochester coach Katie Flynn went to a full-court press of her own in an attempt to close the gap. However, the press was ineffective against Wawasee’s ball handling. “We were really tight tonight and there was no reason for the players to be that way,” said Brannock. “We played well enough to win. I think you’ll find that this is typical of this bunch. They’ll do what they have to do to win.” It was very evident from last night’s action that the “what” for the Lady Warriors is the running game. Once they got the break going, Rochester had no chance of staying close. Wawasee literally ran away with the game. Swope finished the night with
Jackets. Steph Berkey added seven points for the winners. In seventh grade action, North Webster rolled to a 21-11 victory behind Michelle Dick’s six points. Faith Hapner had four points for the losers and was credited with a fine all-around game.
22 points on 9-20 shooting. If it had not been for a cold spell in the final stanza, she would have challenged Barb Brouwer’s single-game school record of 26 points. Payne was the only other Wawasee player in double figures. She was 5-7 from the field and 2-2 from the charity stripe for a total of 12 points. The Zebras enjoyed a 28 to 25 advantage on the boards largely due to Cohagan and Gardner who pulled down seven each. Christy Speicher had four caroms to lead the Lady Warriors. As a team, Wawasee was hot from the charity stripe but cold from the field. Only one of 12 free throws failed to find its mark. However, the Lady Warriors converted on only 22 of 63 shots for 35 per cent from the floor. The Zebras were 11 of 39 for 28 per cent. Junior Varsity Coach Barb Brouwer and her roundbailers evened their record at 2-2 with a 31-27 win in the preliminary contest. Wawasee held a 10-point lead with less than two minutes to go, but Rochester rallied to narrow the gap at the end. A field goal from Dawn Coy and a free throw from Kelly’ Brooks was the only scoring the Lady Warriors could manage in

the first quarter. Trailing 7-3 at the beginning of the second quarter, the team caught fire and moved out to a 15-11 lead at the half. The lead grew to 25-17 after three quarters. Ann Vitaniemi had six points on the night. The trio of Dawn Coy, Cris Troup and Amy Bucher totaled 12 points — four each. From the line, the jayvees shot 45 per cent.
Troup, Lori Galloway and Becca Stiver dressed for the junior varsity contest last night. Brannock made the move in order to increase their playing time. All three came on late in the varsity contest and turned in good performances.

Concord, currently 4-2, is the next obstacle in the Lady Warriors path. The NLC school lost an outstanding player, Shelly Roberts, to graduation, but has a strong group of returnees. “They are a good ball club,” said Brannock. “They are a good passing club and Scott Shaw (the coach) really does a nice job.” The Minutewomen are led by the trio of Deb Brownsberger, Lisa Kemp and Dee King. King averaged 9.1 points per contest last year. Brownsberger contributed 7.5 points per game in the 15-4 1982-83 campaign. Next Monday, the team travels to Elkhart Central for what promises to be a tough contest. The Blazers have four starters back from the 5-14 team of a year ago. Kim Shroff and Annette James give Central a good inside game.
Ralph Bushong runs Marion Marathon
After preparing for the Marion Marathon two months in advance, Ralph Bushong, Syracuse, was disappointed with his performance on Saturday, Nov. 19. “In the last six miles, I just ran out of gas,” said Bushong, who has competed in marathons all across the country. “Maybe I will go to shorter distances because it’s discouraging when you train so hard, and perform so bad.” Bushong, who teaches at Syracuse Junior High, feels like he might have overtrained for the recent marathon. “Before this race I was running an average of 60 miles a week,” said the science teacher. “Maybe it was too much.” Along with his last marathon, Bushong also has raced in four Chicago marathons, four Fort Wayne marathons, along with the Boston Marathon. During one of his races in the Windy City, Bushong put forth his Dating data The Better Business Bureau warns of ‘checking out’ any dating, matrimonial or social referral services before advancing them a large amount of money. k / RALPH BUSHONG finest effort of his career with a 3:09 clocking, in comparison, Bushong was clocked in Marion in a time of 3:31. Although he has experienced a somewhat disappointing race in Marion, Bushong will continue to run. “It’s a challenge to see if you can accomplish what you train for,” said Bushong. “Also, you learn so much about yourself while running that you can’t quit.” Even with the poor race, Bushong is noted around the area as a fine runner. Recently in Bluffton, Ohio, he ran in a half marathon which he captured first place in his age division. “Bluffton was very gratifying” said Bushong, who also enjoys the shorter distances. “I’ve been thinking about just sticking to shorter distances.” Bushong, who runs daily, plans on taking a break for a short time, before planning his future with another marathon.
